Is there a way to chat or bring up the map during a game and *not* cause your mech to grind to a halt?

It makes it very inconvenient to communicate battle info.

Yes. Go into Options and turn off Throttle Decay.

While you're in there, turn off Arm Lock and test that for a few matches to see how you like aiming the way it's supposed to be. You can always go back into Options and turn it back on if you choose to.

Your 'mech will continue trundling along at whatever speed you were at when you opened the window, unless you have Throttle Decay enabled. That way, as soon as you release the 'W' key your throttle is set to zero and you will slow to a stop.

The option is found in the main Options screen, in the lower left quadrant. I suggest turning it off.

EDIT: Damnit, ninja'd.

Note: If you're using a throttle stick or joystick, you will always grind to a halt.

Tip, before using the map or chat, press 0 on the numpad. This will bring you to 100% speed and will NOT stop when you do those things.

Otherwise if using the keyboard, turning off throttle decay will work. Note that "X" is full stop.

What Kon said. :D

From what I gather, this was a bug some time ago, had been fixed, and then was reintroduced with a somewhat recent patch. I'm hoping at some point they get this working right again...seems a shame to slam on the brakes every time I pull up the battle grid map, type in chat, look at the leaderboard or just hit the "Q" key to see where folks are.

Oh, and a slight revision on the way this works...I have to center the analog throttle FIRST, and THEN hit the "0" key on the keypad to have the auto-throttle kick in. The two apparently don't play well together.

I don't have to do that. But I do have to jiggle the throttle stick to get it to read again.

By the way, you can use all numbers on the numpad to adjust autorun speed. They are percentage of max speed in 10% steps (2 = 20% etc).

Also, you might want to ask short questions here in the future: Short Question - Short Answer
(helps reducing forum flooding)

So far as I have experienced, it has been really inconsistent whether I do or do not stop. While I do have throttle decay on, I have 1 key assigned to 100% throttle. Sometimes, after pressing that key and bringing up map or chat, I stop, other times I don't. Seems to change every match. Hopefully this bug can be fixed, because it really hampers communicating with teammates and checking on their position's.

That helps, but even at the start of the game, I have it happen even when I have the throttle set wide open with the 0 key. But it seems to go away after about 5 minutes.

hasn't got me killed yet.

It never occurred to me to turn off throttle decay. Not sure if I would like it being off. Maybe I'll give it a shot. I use a tenkeyless keyboard, so the number pad isn't an option, though I do map a couple of the throttle level keys to F# just for a little convenience.

Arm lock was one of the first changes I made in the settings. Can't imagine playing with it on. :D
