If you lose, you only get the
for showing up, even if you killed/damaged/spotted/etc enemies. If you win, you get all the rewards for doing such. I think that should be incentive enough to promote coordination and team tactics.

Unfortunately (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), both a win and a loss provide the same C-bill reward. Currently, the only reward for winning is the fact that it typically means you have the opportunity to be in the match longer to rack up damage, assists, CD's and other things that add to that C-bill total.
I think if they reduced the reward for a loss (or doubled it for a win), it would go a long way toward promoting coordination and team tactics.

Not true. Winners get salvage and a bigger pay rate (30K vs 10K I think), and in conquest losers don't get 100% of their resource pay.

I'm an experienced light pilot, and I have a few mediums -- my Yen Lo Wang got me into the 1,000 damage club. I have a Quickdraw. But I'm trying out my new Victor, and while I'm getting a few hundred damage, I don't really feel like I know what I'm doing at any particular moment.
Even with all the armor, at times I feel just as fragile as my Commando. Because I don't have the speed to escape, I have to commit fully to every action. It's just not clear what actions I should take and how best to support the team in this role.

Assaults can actually be some of the hardest to master if you're not used to them.
The very basic concepts are:
Getting hit sucks.
Thus, DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ARMOR. Armor is for when you screw up or someone else forces you into a bad situation.
In order to acheive this; limit your exposure to incoming weapons fire by exploiting every shred of cover (things that will STOP incoming weapons fire) and concealment (things that hide you visually and on sensors) on the map. You just have to know the maps better than everyone else!
---
The flipside? You're carrying a LOT more damage output potential than the lower weight 'mech classes. Learn to exploit it fully in ways that don't expose you to incoming weapons fire.
This will not be easy, because assaults are slow and big - EASY targets. It can be done, though.
Don't be afraid to leg your targets, or shoot them in the back, or expoit cover endlessly. If people complain at you for doing this - make sure to enrage them even more by doing it to them even more.
Mad people are people who make rash mistakes.

I didn't think about the additional rewards like salvage. I just checked last night, however, and I got a 25K line item reward for both a win and a loss.

Lots og good advice here. My two cents are be precise in your shooting. Use R to find out what parts of the enemy are about to go and hit that part. Don't just blast away at first opportunity at the general CT area. That and twist your torso to spread damage when under fire. Don't just stare head on at a target while aiming to shoot. Learn to sweep back and forth, timing your shots as you sweep across the intended target. Large lasers work against this though as you need to keep them focused on a given body part.
