Price point comparison/ what really should you be looking for in the modern monitor?

fast response time(under 5ms), gaming with a 7ms or slower response time leads to tearing and ghosting(google is your friend if you don't know those terms)

high resolution, I'm currently using a 1920*1200 24" monitor. I also own a 30" 2560*1600 monitor. Higher resolution means higher detail, but it also means more work for your video card/cards

high contrast ratio, my current 24" only has a contrast ratio of 1000:1, so blacks look more like a really dark grey. The higher the contrast ratio, the better the colors

As a rule I'd recommend the high end Dell monitors - their profesional range are a bit cheaper than the other brands and just as good, I've been using an ultrasharp 2407 for the last 6 years and its still every bit as good as the day I bought it ;)

unless you can snag an LED monitor, your best bet in terms of price/image quality comparison is some type of S-PVA panel, which is what I have. if you can at all avoid it, DO NOT get a TN panel. those are the ones on display at best buy and such places that have terrible viewing angles (the colors distort if you look at them from any angle other than straight on), drab colors, low brightness and saturation. the other ones are more expensive but completely worth it. IPS panels are what the top of the line apple displays were made from before they switched to LED, and I believe their retina screen on their iphones were IPS as well.

for that price i guarantee you it's not an LED monitor, but an LCD (probably TN) with LED backlighting. you don't regret it because you've probably never seen an s-ips or s-pva display. after living with mine i could never go back to a TN panel again. also all computer monitors are progressive scan, and have been so far longer than TVs.

I have an HP w2338h. It will work for now...it's LCD, 5ms, etc...but I have my eye on a newer montior when I can afford it. I'm at budget on my new build so I'll have to work with what I have for now.
