I think that many of the MWO fans are getting bored with the same old maps OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Level building or rather making maps like these really isn't that hard. With that said, the need for fresh content to keep us ADDICTED is REALLY NEEDED. PGI maybe saving up the excitement for the next 3 stages in development. HOT on the HEELS of MWO is the much anticipated STAR CITIZEN which may prove to be a MWO KILLER. As for me I will probably play both, but which one will soak up the most of my hard earned cash??? I have stopped spending any money on MWO. After about 240.00 USD is enough for me at this point. At the least 2 new maps a month would help breath life back into some of our lifeless brothers. I am still a big fan of MWO and probably will be for awhile. But as of now, I am afraid I too maybe heading to ICU on a respirator. Maybe some sneak peeks at the new upcoming maps, concept art or just something on the launcher other than BUY ME BUY ME spend more MC! I really love this game and anything to do with MechWarrior for many years. But please DEVS throw us some appetizers.

I feel your frustration. But according to PGI, making maps like these is actually hard. We experience that ourselves with every new map with bugs that gets us stuck. In my dreams, I would of course want that every time I drop, there's a new random map. Since I guess such technology isn't feasible yet, I've been wondering if the maps could be at least made from say 6x6 tiles, which are randomized. For each map, I guess there would have to be more than 6x6=36 tiles to make sure all tiles fuse well together. But I guess this is too difficult to do as well.

With the latest info from PGI, I think I saw them say that they're now finally trying to make the non-base cappoints random somehow but still keep the bases at the default places. If the bases where ppl start are not randomized as well, the point is greatly missed because I for once would like the feeling in the beginning of the map that we don't even know where the enemy is coming from. We would really need scouts then.

I take it you havent seen this then ?

Making maps that look as good as this takes a long long time, let alone ironing out bugs from ones they've rushed <Cough, Terra Therma>

New maps every couple of weeks would be lovely but frankly i'm happy that they're i) designing any at all, and ii) making them look as pretty and detailed as they can.

I'm sure it's not trivial to implement, but procedural terrain generation is an existing technology. A quick Google search will reveal hundreds of papers on the subject.

Maps generated with this process would have a few downsides compared to the current maps:
  • They wouldn't each have a unique look.
  • They wouldn't necessarily be balanced.
As far as I'm concerned though, this is a price worth paying. The balance issue is less of a problem when the maps are unfamiliar to the players, and I'd rather have challenging gameplay than shiny things to stare at.

I think that if they were to reduce the weighting on the newer maps, or not weight them as long as they do, the "shortage" of maps would not be as apparent. I played over 6 hours last night and never saw Caustic but got Terra Therma, Tourmaline, and Canyon repeatedly. Just makes it feel like we have fewer maps than we do.

If they turn out good quality maps every few months, I'd be a very happy boy. Don't forget, now this new map will decrease the amount of time you spend in Terra Therma a little bit as every new map will. Looking at some of the map suggestion ideas, I hope they get those rollling soon. There's lots of good ideas. We just have to be patient... as irritating as it may seem.

I have to agree the new Island City map is VERY WELL DONE. With really good attention to detail... pretty much makes or breaks a map. CHEERS to the guy or guys that made this one!!! You have made a lot of us very happy. But good map making isn't that hard ONCE you understand your tools or rather EDITOR. And have a STRONG grasp of your supporting applications. 3DSMAX, Photoshop, dDO, nDO2, Knald, xNormal, World Machine, GeoControl2, TerraGen, Terra Sculpter, TopoGun, 3D Coat, Mudbox, Zbrush, UV Layout Pro just to name a few. LEARNING these apps takes ALOT of time. This is just a few of the tools out there, but these are the ones I like to use the most. Each one has its own BUGS and problems to work around which REALLY makes asset creation and map making a PAINFUL experience. Each editor such as Unity Pro, Unreal SDK and Sandbox also have their own issues and work arounds if you can find them. Sometimes you have to figure them out on your own. Here's a great set of tutorials by Wenda on terrain creation techniques for those of you who stumble upon it.

Would think their would be Easter eggs in these new maps. Like a hidden tunnel from one end of a map to other (or something), or Mech hanger, or a building falls. Still waiting to roll out of a Dropship at start.
