Hi all,
I have been playing for about a month and a half now and generally feel like I have a good feel for a lot of the game mechanics and such. BUT, sometimes you come across something you just aren't sure about.
Enter chainfire. I understand the concept, have a series of weapons fire one after another so as to avoid higher heat build up and have constant dps rather than hit, pause, hit, etc.
But how do you get the game to do it? Is it a macro? Or a certain key stroke? And when is it most beneficial to use? What type of weapons work best with it? Specifically, I see this in relation to UAC 5s since you also have the jam/double-tap issue.
Any help would be appreciated, even if it is just pointing me to an existing thread discussing it

it's the backspace-key
toggles the currently selected weapon-group to chainfire.
when it's most beneficial depends on what you want to do.
i use it to avoid the heat-penalty and heat-build-up on my awesome, and for constant dakka with multiple ACs.
just give it a try =)

Use the arrow keys to select the firing group you want to chain fire, then as Viper says, hit Backspace.
I run lasers grouped quite often, so when I'm in a brawl and coming to the end of my heat-endurance, I'll switch to chain fire to keep dishing out the damage while lowering the risk of inadvertent shutdown.
Then there's MOAR DAKKA, endless cockpit shake from missile hits, or simple preference that might dictate your use of chain-fire.

Yes, the 'backspace' key will switch a group to chainfire-mode. It won't be as effective as players using macros. Though IGPGI has stated macros are OK, I consider them to be cheating, so I won't link you to any discussions of their use. I'm sure some 'easy-mode' macro user will come along and show you the way.

It's also possibly worth noting that you don't have to all-or-nothing on the chainfire. For example, with 4 lasers on a typical Jenner JR7-D, you can have Group 1 set to chainfire your left arm lasers, Group 2 to chainfire your right arm lasers, Group 3 to chainfire all your lasers, and Group 4 to fire all your lasers without chainfire and also without including your missiles. That way, you've got the ability to fire 1 laser at a time by holding 3, 2 lasers at a time by holding 1 and 2 together, double speed chaining the lasers by pressing and holding 1 and then pressing 2 halfway through firing, firing all the lasers without wasting missiles with group 4, etc.
