Battletech vs Mechwarrior

The following is just my opinion . . and like <censored> everyone has one. There are those of you that might agree with me and there are going to be those of you that don't.

Either way, I feel it's important enough to post this so here goes.

It was recently pointed out in a thread that got closed, that the Mechwarrior video games have nothing to do with the Battletech game itself.

I, personally, disagree with that assumption as without the Battletech game, the Mechwarrior video games would not exist.

The Mechwarrior video games take everything they have from the Battletech TT game. The weapons, the background/lore, everything.

I don't think it's possible to declare "Mechwarrior" as a stand-alone franchise, with nothing to do with it's Battletech roots. Mainly because without Battletech, Mechwarrior couldn't stand on its own.

It was pointed out that Mechwarrior cannot be 100% compliant with its TT counterpart. And while I don't think that's true, I do see where somethings may need to diverge (or change) in order to make a fun and functional online game. That's not being debated, at least I don't think it is.

It was also pointed out that MWO should be "true to the Mechwarrior franchise". In this I disagree with much vehemence. MWO, from my understanding, isn't being designed to be a successor to the Mechwarrior video games, it's being designed to be a successor to the Battletech franchise and to bring to the online world what the outdated technology of yesteryear could not.

I can agree that Mechwarrior wouldn't be around without battletech.

I actually think it's kind of a silly argument to say that mechwarrior doesn't need battletech.

Lets make a comparison shall we?

Medal of honor. Takes place in WWII. You play as a random solder, He shoots and runs around and blows stuff up.

Mechwarrior. Take place in the Battletech universe. You play as a mech pilot, that shoots, runs around etc..

If WWII never happened you couldn't really have a medal of honor.

If Battletech didn't exist you couldn't really have mechwarrior.

The mechwarrior universe IS the battletech universe.

unless it's considered different wile remaining completely identical.

then I got nothing..


That being said, I freaking Love Battletech and Mechwarrior.

Table top, novel, or PC game. I love the whole thing.

hence why MWO is a "reboot" of mechwarrior it's changing/adding some things but not everything. It's goal is to make it what it can be but not detract anything if I am reading everything right. I view mechwarrior as a pilot who though the games/events are not an official part of the timeline THEY could have happened in the timeline. Just because they arn't stated in the canon doesn't mean they never happened. It just means they were not really big enough events to really be mentioned in the history books. Like how our own general history books gloss over or completely leave out alot of events. So I consider Mechwarrior to be a part of Battletech in a similar way that theres the American take on WWII and another countries take on the war (England, Germany, Japan, France, Italy a bunch of others).

Oh and wikipedia isn't exactly a great source but heres what it says on wikipedia about the MW games.

MechWarrior is the title of a series of computer and video games set in the fictional universe of BattleTech

I think I can live with a lot of diverse opinions about what is or isnt Mechwarrior ; do we need TT rules?

Doe Mechs need hands or Melee weapons and or combat?

I think the DEVs have a handle on the needs to Balance the game play and the difference between a

TT game and a SIM game.

What I love most is the Main overreaching storie of the Battle tech Universe, and, well a chance to be

part of that .

It's updating the 80's mentality I think.

Far as Mechwarrior goes it simply wouldn't exist without Battletech I wouldn't think...since that was what it was licensed from. On the other hand there are large portions of Battletech to never get into a Mechwarrior game. So they aren't entirely equal. If Battletech is Mechwarrior than Mechwarrior is Mechassault. It's a simplified version of Battletech that went in a slightly different direction...much like what MA did!

Yes sir...yes they doe indeed. I'd be happy with a line by line translation of the ol hex game into a real time sim. Though we're probably only ever get so much of that. Not that what we'll end up is nessicarily bad either.

I have to agree.
I fell in love with this game after purchasing MW2 when unable to find a good flight simulator...
Since then I have also played both the Battletech table top game, and Mechwarrior the RPG spinoff.


Mechwarrior is the first person perspective of the Battletech universe, that's all. Brilliant fun, awesome visually (especially 2 & 3 which were bleeding edge at the time of release) and detailed, but the game it simulates is Battletech.
I did not personnally agree with the changes made for MW4 but I understand they were considered necessary for multiplayer.
I would like to see this game return to the detail which makes Battletech such a grand game! I dont need to be able to mod it all the time, but it should be core to the designs which are available until the clans drop omnis on our poor heads, or I gain enough prestige and sheer cash to be able to convince a chop shop to modify a mech for myself. ;)

Oh and with regards to melee, it really IS necessary if only to rebalance the weapons list.
After all what stops a group of lights simply running straight into an awesome and surrounding it? With three PPCs it cant really fight back untill it can get seperation, which it could never get if the scout pilots were any good .... but the availability of melee options gives him a fighting chance, by forcing the scout pilots to keep out of range of the left arm or feet or be swatted by about 5 tons of swinging metal.
Why wasnt it in previous games? Look at the AI, not the ability to code melee attacks. How many times did the bot mechs simply run up to point blank range?
