You actually made a good choice. Going for the easy mechs won't make you a better player. You might have a little more frustration than people who went for the easy choice but once you learn how to make mediums work you'll be pretty dominant in any fight.

Stick with the mechs you have, elite them out. Getting those elite bonuses on mechs makes a huge difference so don't give up on any mechs before you have them.

I wouldn't develop buyers remorse right now. THe medium mech are still great in pick up play. Just remember you aren't as fast as lights and not as armored as a heavy and you will be okay. You still have enough firepower, speed, and armor to get you out of the frying pan if you make a mistake. You can't always do that in the other weight classes. In competitive 12-man drops mediums aren't great but if you just started you aren't in competitive matches anyway. NEVER SELL A HERO MECH! Use this mech to practice different builds and make some C-Bills. Byt he time you have enough for another mech you will have gotten better at playing.
