1. You do have a different Elo score for each weight class. I'm not going to hunt for the links, but I am 100% positive of this - there are about 500 different threads in these forums concerning how Elo is calculated, I'm sure you can find one with links easily enough.
2. The matchmaker puts teams together, and then tries to match 2 teams whose average Elos are about equal against each other.
3. If you have a very high Elo, you're generally going to be teamed up with people who aren't as good as you - that's just the way it is.
4. Matchmaking in online games is really, really hard to do well. Elo may not be a perfect system, but I've yet to see anyone suggest a system that would work better.

What I´m trying to say is: The system is more unfair now than when there wasn´t elo matchmaking, at least for good players. Back then I had a small chance of entering a match where the 2 teams were really equals or where i could really win a single match for a change. It was really fun, We could see how good players really were. Now, with elo, I ALWAYS get the worst team, with people who don´t try to understand basic tactics or even listen to seasoned players.
Why it´s unfair? Look: a team formed by 1 really high elo and 11 low elo is not the same as a team of 6 medium elo and 6 low elo.
As you said, this is a team game, and armors are too damn high for a single mech to make a real difference in battle. So the really high elo player will be crushed by the 6 medium elo gang. This is just a rough example, but you can see the picture.
It´s like making the first place in a race to run too damn slow because everyone else suck at racing. The only way you can avoid this system, is if you launch a premade team with LOTS of your high elo friends (and I see that a lot). The problem is, I dont have friends playing this game anymore, they uninstaled it a long time ago because all the issues... so, now I´m being punished for being a good player AND for not being able to launch premade teams...
Of course, most of you don´t have any of this problems. But PGI, as a business company, should be interested in why me and lots and lots of other players are dropping this frustrating game for not being able to enjoy at least a fair match, besides all the other issues.
I´ll check again after the lauch module, but I really doubt it it will get better. And now that I saw golden Timberwolves, I´m really depressed to keep playing.

At one time very likely. There have been some changes and right now it very likely doesn't. You can however control what players are put in what lance in the group queue. The order of joining the group will affect lance placement and you often have groups juggling players in and out to group the DWFs up so they all spawn together

This is not the case if there is a premade with one really good player and 3 really bad ones as it lumps them all in the highest elo of the premade and that brings their side's average elo artifically up causing other players on their side to be lower then they should be.

Then are we taking about over all ELO or by mech and or Clan and Inter-sphere? What about by Map (standard play and CW?).
Sorry for the multiple edits.
What about Pug team vis Pre-made drop in teams?
That's kind of confusing. AND I still want a cookie!

the way matchmaker works (or at least worked last time I saw a dev thread about it) is:
each weight class has a seporate Elo
the matchmaker tries to put players together into a team within a narrow Elo range (in the group queue it takes the groups average Elo), with 3 Mechs of each weight class, if it takes too long it expands the range and loosens the weight class requirements, every 30 seconds the requirements are loosened, however it still tries to keep the average Elo the same on both teams.
so if you find a match within about 30 seconds it should have a perfect 3,3,3,3 and have players with close skill levels however by the time you have been waiting 4+ minutes you will get a wide range of skill levels and may end up with e.g. no Light Mechs 2 Mediums, 6 Heavies and 4 Assaults on your team
