New maps will be restricted to night versions of Tourmaline, Crimson Straight, Forest Colony, and Terra Therma! Look forward to using Night Vision on all these new maps coming in 2014!

Oh? I would really like to see confirmation of that. Got a link or just rumor? I'd love to see the following alternates:

Alpine Peaks Snow
Alpine Peaks Night
Caustic Valley Night
Tourmaline Desert Night
Tourmaline Desert Duststorm
Crimson Straits Night
Crimson Straits Fog/Storm
Crimson Straits On Fire
River City Fog/Storm
Canyon Network Night
Canyon Network Fog/Storm
Terra Therma Day
Forest Colony Night

PGI has the option to run a map making contest. Anyone with a CryEngine game has the map maker built it. So they just need to release an asset pack for their environmental objects and that can be used to create community maps.

Those could be selected and throw up into a contest where PGI determines the best 5 maps and releases those as official community map pack.

It works for Halo, and Red Orchestra. Not sure why it can't work here.

Not sure how that's the case. Most studios keep development pretty close to the vest. Releasing an asset package associate with current maps and having the community work to create more maps has nothing secretive about it. It's just art assets meant to be used in the map creation process. Allowing the end users to develop these maps and further add content to the title can only help it in the long run.

What about re-skin terra therma as a stand in for a new map? (two maps for the price of one, we have that with other maps) Drop air temp' to 25 degrees. Replace ominous sky with recycled crimson straight sky. Replace rocky ground with grass and flowers. Replace rocky outcrop texture with tree trunks. Replace lava with flowing water. Replace steel bridges and chains with bamboo and rope bridges and the spare bridge parts with thatched roof huts. Could be a fair bit of work for a map people are somewhat familiar with. Then again it could be easy for some fan/hobbyist with time on their hands.

i am full of potentially dumb ideas just like that. If you need any just ask.

They could easily build different versions of existing maps another turmaline desert map as example with the same assets used just a different layout, but atleast i realy dont know what the problem is.

Official Statement:

Someone said, we need more maps:

Bryan Ekman ‏@bryanekman 17. Apr.
@_Wieland_ yes we agree. We needed to shift resources around a bit to accommodate our mech delivery schedule.

Some more new maps would be nice, I'd love to see a large lake type map. Imagine the surpise of a mech come rising out of the lake to blow people into oblivion..or get blown into oblivion..lol Or perhaps a heavily Forested map with a nice picturesque river to stomp through. Or a large Cityscape for some more urban romping. Possibilites are endless.

We have the year 2014. Is it really that hard to do Weather/Time of Day changes with todays mapmakers?

More than likely it's to do with someone creating a map and then turning around and suing for money even if they say it's ok to use.

Last thing they want is to do a cross border legal battle with someone from USA, where lets face it there's a LOT of crazy lawsuits going where half of it makes no sense
Eg. Samsung Apple battle where previous design ideas from the 50's just don't seem to be examples of prior art!

For their sake, I hope they're stockpiling multiple maps right now for release with CW... if it comes.

Bump again - don't want this one to get buried. The only real weakness of this game now is the variety of maps. It's getting to the point where I rarely see more than two of the same mechs on a team (unless a pre-made is specifically dropping as something), so mechs are in a pretty good place and mount a wide variety of playing styles and builds.

But the maps, man...

It feels like the maps repeat so much because I'm so used to playing on them. I can usually eat or do something else during the first couple minutes of a match because I know exactly where to go, know where teams on either side will go, can point my mech in that direction, and then just set my speed.

There's no "wow! I forgot about this map!"

I mean, there's...what, eight maps? I mean, there's the night version and the white-out version on two of them, but...come on. I like this game a lot, I still play it a lot, but I'm getting seriously bored with the scenery.

Read this over the weekend and thought I'd share it here, as I am also passionate about seeing new maps (despite my relative newness):

Hey all,

Thanks for raising this concern, While map generation once all or most art assets are available can be a much quicker process, allowing other processes like testing to take place sooner as well: This is only the case once those art assets are indeed completed.

The Map team has been focused predominantly on getting as wide a range as possible of different kinds of environments put together. Once we've got those basic environmental types pinned down, it will be that much easier for the team to create more maps on the fly by reusing some of the terrains and doodads they'd previously created for that environment type. We've also attempted to balance the long-term need to have this range against player expectations for more frequent maps with the release of variations of existing maps, such as Forest Colony Snow or Frozen City Nights.

Please also keep in mind that some of the map design crew performs a different job than those who design the 'Mechs. Both have independent tasks involved with separate focus on level and environmental design and character design / 3d-rigging. We do appreciate that some players would like to see more maps sooner and others would like to see more Mechs sooner, but it isn't always a trade-off of one for the other.
