Some weapons can crit through armor, just like in the tabletop.

Override Shutdown, overheat, boom goes your internals. No bug.

It's like this: The only way you get the Engine Destroyed message is when your CT internal structure goes to zero (or side torso if running an XL). Critting the engine doesn't do anything - it doesn't destroy the engine, and it doesn't kill your 'mech.

So either you weren't looking close enough at your damage readout, or you missed an alpha that took away your armour and IS.

Edit: Or you had an ammo explosion in the CT (or ST if running XL).

Sometimes damage to a destroyed limb (arm or leg) will spread to the internals in your side torso, causing your engine to explode even though your armor on your torso was intact.

If you're suggesting that your mech had armour everywhere and no heat problems and just suddenly exploded, then it seems most likely that you missed something. I've played thousands of matches without seeing something like that. People claim it happens from time to time, but they are always relatively inexperienced players and are likely to have missed something important.

I think I've had something similar:

Spoiler

My leg was destroyed yet I had barely scratched armour (yellow). The screenshot was taken around 10 seconds later after the enemy team had their fun.

I do think it's a very rare event where internals can be heavily damaged in a very short space of time that's not due to heat, but have no idea what actually causes it :/

Now, I admit I was relatively inexperienced at the time, but I've died suddenly for no reason, once, and I don't believe I missed anything. Though it was some time ago.

Less than 20 seconds into the match, driving YLW, fired 2 medium lasers once and BOOM! "OneEyed Jack has killed OneEyed Jack." This was long before the death screen, so that was all the info provided. That makes it also long before heat damage could have killed me, even if 2 ML fired once could possibly kill a mech with overheat.

According to the developers, this is something that does not happen in MWO.

Of course, maybe it can when the amount of armor becomes zero in one shot and the remaining damage then eats away internal health. But as long as armor is there and not gone with the next shot, there can't be any crits. And I believe this is reasonable. Dual-lbx + dual-machinegun would otherwise rule supreme.

If you walk out of bounds it kills you via engine destruction.

I've had the "Engine Destroyed" message and wondered what killed me. Usually it's a combination of AC/5, Large Laser, AC/2, PPC...apparently someone told the other team I should be focused...and they agreed.
