But the Battlemaster has other drawbacks/annoyances that make a "not very good" mech for my tastes/play style.

Personal bias tells me to advise you against running an XL, but the choice is yours. You may enjoy an XL on the -1S if you want to boat missiles AND go faster than 51kph.

Not brave enough to slap an XL in so can't coment on its success
What I do find ironic is its an energy mech its well known for being one, yet its best builds are balistic/missile load outs, with a few lasers thrown in to fill up places

All comes down to your Elo and playstyle, i don't think this is a first tier brawler so stay back and XL it.

my 1S is a compromise.
2 ASRM6 in the arms
2 PPC
2 Large Laser.
Dunno if it's a "boat" but it works for me.
My 1G gets 2 AC5, 2 PPC and 4 Mlasers. So I think it counts as an energy boat.
My 1D, well, still working on that.

Seriously, even with torso twisting, even with the shoulder target, I die to CT-coring more than anything.
The arms are great shields but you can still get CT cored even when being hit from the side.
It is not a bad mech though; just not a great brawler, in my opinion. It's King Hippo; just punch the poor ******* in the belly button and win.

yessir. All my BLRs have XLs. Actually, all my PHX mechs do now. They seem to tank em like a Boss. I die to CT death more than anything, and even then it's after taking a LOT of damage.

I used to think that Assaults require STD engines due to their tanking ability and that running an XL engine was just ridiculous. The Victor has changed my mind on that. Plus, I can't see piloting a Battlemaster with a STD engine.
Now mind you, I do not like Assaults that much anyway due to their slow speeds and clumsy movements so I have no patience for a STD engined Assault. Still, I think the Battlemaster and Victor use those engines well. Maybe larger Assaults like the Atlas and Stalker might still be better with a STD engine...and that is why I don't pilot them.;

Highlander does pretty solid with XLs, too. The arms and torso protect it pretty well, as do the JJs.
On some mechs, like the Atlas and Stalker, yeah, no XLs. But the flip side to many fights, is that one might need to tank less if one had sufficient firepower to end the engagement fast.

CT is very hard to hit from the side if the mech has it's shoulder fully towards you. If it is just a bit off that 90 degree angle though it can be hit.

It does terrible things to other mechs.
Unspeakable horrible terrible things.

This man speaks the truth. I have 400XL in mine as well, 6ML, 1 PPC, and 1 SRM6. Makes for a lot of fun.
