I have seen other players playing in third person who also have the small minimap showing in the lower center of the cockpit. How is this done? Whenever I go to third person view I automaticlly loose the minimap.

Is this when viewing a player after dying? If so its only you who can see the mini-map, no one can see it when in 3rd person.

Yep - it was when spectating. That explains it. Thanks a lot for the help Jammerben. I was trying everything.

Well.- someone could say try the, alternative 3rd person view (Alt+F4)... but that would be far too obvious a troll 
(even though it gets you out of the cockpit much quicker in a slightly "un"expected way).
Dont forget, once you get used to the mech movement, the 3rd person view is actually pretty detrimental to aiming and moving in a group (You cant aim as well as through the cockpit window most of the time and due to the loss of the minimap you wont see where the enemy or your teammates are as well).
