Ok, yeah... so I went a little overboard with this when I should have been working on client stuff... but damn, these are just way to much fun. I'm sure I didn't quite hit everyone's vision of an MWO Marauder, but I tried to bring in as many of your ideas as I could while still staying true to what I would personally love to stomp around in. I know the cockpit will be a point of contention, but I've grown pretty attached to the unintentional screaming face. I may still sneak in a few more tweaks if I find the time, but this will likely be my final image.

I'm really loving those legs.. those got some crazy reach and flexibility. Maybe for a heavy mech with these legs, the Marauder can climb steeper hills with less deceleration? :P

when i stuck the knee forward for mine i wasn't thinking about that, it was just noticing the original sticky out awkward legs of the original and throwing the knees into "reverse". Mac's taken it to another extreme and i like it just lengthen the torso and guns a bit more forward and it will look great... although i prefer the cockpit i drew but i'm totally biased like that :P

Thank you all for the helpful feedback. Based on some comments here and in my other thread, I'm going to go ahead and readdress the proportions of the torso, AC and shoulders as well as some slight reshaping to the feet.

I'm keeping the digitigrade legs though, since they seem to be generally well received. My thinking behind going with the more unconventional design was to pay homage to how alien and weird the original unseen design felt when stood up next to other mechs of it's time. I wanted to capture that tall, gangly look while still keeping it functional, if I tried that with the reverse "chicken walker" legs, it would just look like a stork. At the same time, this is also one of the main design additions that undeniably sets it far enough apart from the original to keep everyone's legal teams happy.

yay! Glad you're keeping the legs :) I think you have a nice unique design! It is my wallpaper atm.
You better keep that screaming cockpit too! *shakes fist*

I want to see Dadrick's design done in Marcobra's styling.

That would be /IT/ in my opinion.

Would absolutely love to see that.

Not mine, not for the contest, but i love this concept..

Posted Image

It looks sturdier than the original..less drone/insect so maybe not iconic, but it would fit perfectly in MWO imho because pretty easier to design and to confine hitboxes (with some work to do on center torso).

This is Shimmering Sword's (Anthony Scroggins) Marauder design:

His design was also adapted for the experimental MAD-4X Marauder seen on the cover of XTRO: Succession Wars Vol I (published November 2012), so it kind of makes it a little more official:

EDIT: Also as I've said before, Topps, Inc. owns all the Battletech art that goes into sourcebooks and print media. Catalyst Games licenses the art from Topps. FD (Alex Iglesias) is MWO's artist, and while MWO can't use actual Topps-owned art, PGI (Alex) can create new art based on sourcebook material... just like every mech already in the game.

TLDR; So, I don't see why we can't get a Marauder that is FD's take on Shimmering Sword's take of the Marauder. My brain is sort of exploding with the possibilities of awesome right now. (although please armor up that cockpit, and no ReSeen stilt-legs please)

...mentioned back on Page 7.

And yes, it's damn sexy. If PGI put something close to this in MWO, they would get entirely too much of my money.

Hi all. Here is my entry. Sorry for the lack of background art but i wanted to concentrate on the details of the model (it is a design contest after all ;) ) I have made 360 all angle renders and montaged them. The model is 125,000 polygons and took about 30 hours to make. I have tried for a mix between TRO and my own changes to make it unique but still identifiable as a marauder at a glance. The model is built in alexs style so it can be suited to the mech and art styles unique to MWO. (yes i know they are all dirty and this is shiny. i did that so u can see all the detail work.) I am very pleased with the result, and it doesn't take much imagination to see her stomping about on tourmaline dealling PPC death. ( i even used the design for the interchangable weapon pods out of MWO). I hope you guys like it

Spoiler

That is badass and sexy. But in my personal opinion, I think it needs a little bit of a proportions change to be balanced; in its current form I think it would either be absurdly tall to the point where it couldn't hide behind even an Atlas, or absurdly narrow to the point where it would be too difficult to hit relative to its supposed weight. I gather that the Marauder's sort of supposed to look like that, but I think it would be better if the torso had a bit more heft, particularly to the sides.

I almost didn't enter, but after finishing up some work tonight I pumped this out. Pretty loose work, but time is short.

I worked up a mixture of my past Marauder design while referencing MWO concept art to get the style closer (properly emulating Alex's art style would be quite time consuming). I pulled in a few MWO Cataphract details to round it out.

For those wondering about the relation between my original design and the official MAD-4X. Mine came first, or rather mine was done at the same time the 4X was being designed. Catalyst saw my version and asked to use it, swapping and modifying a few parts to fit the loadout and existing concepts. I then painted the official cover art to handle payment for my design work, while Matt Plog finished his job of making the lineart.

I just realized that this is a stupid contest t hat I can only hate, because it leads to many awesome designs, but there is no indication that PGI will add a Marauder to MW:O. #firstworldproblems

and what an entry! Splendid work - it retains the sleekness of the original and doesn't veer to far in the fattened cockpit; it's pure menace... i can't take this much longer; someone make PGI see the unadultered glory of this thread :) !

I fear you're right; but money can be a splendid motivation... i like the direction in which the game is currently going, and if enough people are screaming for Marauders and the rest of the HG - owned unseens; PGI might see some financial benefit in taking this risk.

saddly i don't think so on the same tweet bryan made about wondering what people's expectations are for the design someone asked:

Have your concept artist draw a few designs, then have the community vote!

and russ replied:

its not that simple..HG needs to vote as well and they always vote no :)

so i'm guessing they've tried negotiating with HG and all they've had is warnings not to because they can make more money putting them through the courts than actually negotiating a liscence for a few cases of design adaption appearing in something else other than robotech.

in short HG are stubburn ***** who delight in holding designs prisoner so nobody can do anything with them. if there was any merchandising or something that came up to the amount BT puts out then i'd understand why they'd defend their sales but their not. it's just hording for the sake of being trollish *****. they're trolling a whole bunch of different fanbases, being unco-operative ***** is all they ever do.

btw i might have some extra stuff for the comp, not much but something to give the entrant a bit more weight than those WIP's.

My guess is that HG wants PGI to do what Microsoft did.

Hey cool, there's a lot more great stuff popping up in this thread!

So is an update with some adjustments to the overall proportions. I didn't really make any big moves, but I think all the little tweaks added up to make a pretty decent impact.
