I almost didn't enter, but after finishing up some work tonight I pumped this out. Pretty loose work, but time is short.

I worked up a mixture of my past Marauder design while referencing MWO concept art to get the style closer (properly emulating Alex's art style would be quite time consuming). I pulled in a few MWO Cataphract details to round it out.

For those wondering about the relation between my original design and the official MAD-4X. Mine came first, or rather mine was done at the same time the 4X was being designed. Catalyst saw my version and asked to use it, swapping and modifying a few parts to fit the loadout and existing concepts. I then painted the official cover art to handle payment for my design work, while Matt Plog finished his job of making the lineart.

Great work, as always :)
I've got the feeling this Marauder gained weight. The torso seems a bit broad while the arms look short.

Holy {Scrap} cakes, I make a post about Shimmy working on something for this contest, and the very next post is his submission. XD

Also, I still don't get how BT source material can use redesigns for HG's unseen, but PGI can't.

Hmm...if someone were to start a Change.org petition asking HG to allow the use of redesigns (NOT the original design), how many signatures do you think it'd get?

[EDIT]
...Wait, C-R-A-P is censored? That's not vulgar. Come on, IGP, take the stick out of your cloaca.

It was in Ekman's quote: "What are people's expectations?"

The BT source material has had legal art for these mechs and have been using them for over a decade now, but if you weren't around back then (or don't remember), it caused a HUGE uproar, and most of the community STILL refuses to accept those designs*.

So, what are YOUR expectations? Past experience has shown that the community won't accept anything that doesn't look like the Macross art, and if it looks like the Macross art, HG will get litigious. So, the question is, will YOU be able to accept something that doesn't look like the Macross art? The people in charge probably don't think so. Hopefully this contest will show that they're wrong and that the community is able to let go and move on with art that isn't already licensed. But not likely if the outcome of this contest is still something that looks too much like the original.

*to be fair, the art in TRO:Project Phoenix was pretty horrible, but looking at it a second time, I think it's just the artist that was bad**, not the designs themselves, and with different artists, some of those designs might actually work well.

**Chris Lewis is definitely not my favorite artist, but even compared to the rest of his art, the Project Phoenix art was terrible, like he didn't even really try.

Oh yeah, they are so detailed, mine look like plastic ;)
I just noticed on my design that the arms are a bit limited in their left/right movement, or they would hit the cockpit :)

Shimmering Swords design has a lot of quality, but the mech has also taken alot of carbs. ;)

Well explained. Problem is; i never was a TT - man; and if the MWO-models were based on the original artwork (except for some Macross art; like the Marauder ;)) i guess i would NEVER EVER play this game. Just comparing Alex' design of the Dragon with this retro-fururistic 80ies monstrosity...
Posted Image

i'd rather jam a rusty nail through my knee joint than piloting those... artworks. So; no matter how much complaining the original fanbase may dispense; it doesn't change the fact that the original Marauder is out of the picture. Compared to the reseen; i guess Alex or some of the very talented people in this thread would blow the redesign right out of the water.... and as cool as the original Marauder looks (pretty much the only sexy mech the original artwork has in my opinion; a few others are okay); i'd actually trust them to surpass it. The fanbase will roar up; swear bloody revenge; and then they'll buy it; most likely without saying so.

Keep in mind guys that in the games industry it's not a no until we're actually told no. PGI isn't going to say "yes" to the marauder/warhammer/archer/rifleman until it's a sure deal.

The macros unseen are also a powerful money maker. They've had the founders packs, hero mechs, project phoenix, and no doubt they'll do something for the clans. They would need to time the release of another unseen set for when it will gain the biggest return.

Also, would you guys rather PGI/IGP higher ups be haggling with legal teams, or coordinating community warfare and other important features?

I'm hoping that whichever Marauder wins, that it will have a similar in game advantage to the current Stalker: harder to hit head on because of the long but narrow torso! (Yes, I know we all have to hold our breath to ever see one of these in game)

A man can dream!

And thanks for all the pretty mech ****! [edit: prawn is censored??? Geez]

Cheers to all the artists!

Not mine, not for the contest, but i love this concept..

Posted Image

It looks sturdier than the original..less drone/insect so maybe not iconic, but it would fit perfectly in MWO imho because pretty easier to design and to confine hitboxes (with some work to do on center torso).

Wow by far the most beautifull Marauder version I strumbled across in this thread yet!

hmmm... it is quite funny... i like the old design... i came to the point of loving it even...

i look at those two images of Shimmering Sword and Marcobra, and i would say that Marcoba's design looks more like the original, than Shimmering Sword's one does...

the later one instead, it does look different, yet, i would say it could make quite a nice new Marauder design... :3

been toying around with my pencils, but so far nothing really usable came out yet... :S

nice stuff guys! all of you so far...

yeaah, so much this one, love the design and it has the right amount of bulk to it. It also has some of the traditional marauders curves, but adds a lot more edges to it, making it look more menacing and functional.

imho I love this even more than the original marauder :)

ahhh.. finally. i've returned.
all that time i was far away and can just read and look at small pictures on my phone.
but now i can say - you guys are great! so nice pictures... wow...

but i cant left my own baby alone =)
so little step forward:
i've modelled arm that can move 20 yaw / 30 pitch with reversed joints. I prefer not to hang it low, but to cover torso.
so - first picture - isometric, second - with perspective applied. As you can see - arm with weapon covering a lot of torso.
Spoiler

and now - top part with a tank. they should weigh almost the same.

The original "reseen" designs were almost unilaterally fugly.

On the other hand, I actually like Shimmering Sword's design more than the Macross design. Like I said, if PGI used this, they would get obscene amounts of my money.

Again, that's by Shimmering Sword/Anthony Scoggins, who submitted a slightly modified version of this to this very contest (see page 12, right between two of my posts).

Guys, far from wanting to compete with the masters... this is just my humble (and flawed) vision of the Reseen Marauder, made with parts of MWO mechs.

It's seriously work-in-progress (I can't continue any longer... it's 3 AM here and I'm almost fainting over my keyboard). If you never see me again in the forums is because my wife killed me.

EDIT: second try, a little more polished.
