Absolutely love the mech, and I have no aversion to avoiding the missiles, so my 5S is packing a 300 XL. Went with several builds, but finding myself getting a rekindled love for Gauss and ERPPC. Backed by 3 medium lasers, 15 DHS, and an AMS, the mech runs absolutely fine. Thing is an absolute damage soak, though. It is the first mech that even with an XL it feels like a zombie.

Finally got my 5S elite'd yesterday and I have to admit I'm well and truly smitten. It did take me a while to find a build that I was happy with but I got there in the end.

Being a versatile built it's not as easy to run as a specialised one but I really wanted to keep my 5S true to the spirit of the THUD. Thanks to the THUD's design and hitboxes it's actually surprisingly durable despite running a XL. I'd actually go as far as to argue that providing you're playing properly the THUD is one of the few 'mechs that suffers little to no downside in running a XL. Edit: As demonstrated by Pariah Devalis above.

I haven't yet managed the 6+ kills, 1000+ damage rampage that I've been known to do in my Misery but I'm getting there:

Plus I was pleasantly surprised when looking at my stats overall to discover that the 5S is actually my best performing 'mech.

That said the THUD is not a top tier 'mech but then that was obvious before it even came out. One thing the THUD is though, at least in my opinion, is fun. Also lets be honest, the THUD is by far the best looking 'mech* and at the end of the day that's the most important thing :(.

*Disclaimer: Despite what some people my claim this is fact and anyone saying otherwise is just jealous/has no taste/etc :P.

Edit: To the OP, it may just be me but I personally did notice an improvement in the THUD's responsiveness when getting those skills and then again when getting the 2x from elite'ing. In my opinion, once elite'd the THUD is an absolute joy to pilot.

I will have to say the TBolt was the mech that got me most excited for the Phoenix package as I am predominately a heavy and "light" assault pilot. However even with all the skills unlocked it does feel a little more sluggish then say a Victor or Jagger.

It's not a bad mech and yes obviously you can do well in it when you are used to it (that goes without saying for any mech really) but I can't see it shine vs other mechs. It doesn't have speed or agility to be really dangerous like the other heavies in it's class nor is it able to carry more weapons vs others. On that the torso is extremely wide and makes it easy to target side torso components which any good pilot will go for to disable both side torso and arm mounted weapons which account for the majority of the weapons equiped. The only one that has a possible advantage is the 9SE due to it's JJ.

Again I am not say it's a terrible mech as I am doing quite well in it but IMO it doesn't shine vs the other mechs capable of more without all the disadvantages.
