Yes x 1000.
Would really be cool if they had an EVE style avatar creation tool for portaits.

Especially making uniforms for merc groups or wearing the colours of your house.
Your pilot could even match the camo pattern on your mech!

May be. Or may be it'll be considered "low priority" till UI 15.0 or something. Or may be it's already implemented in UI 2.0 latest build? Who knows?
To me, i must say, this is one insignificant thing. What do i get outta this functionality? A pretty face to look at whenever i am launching the game or meddling in the mechlab? Well, that's what pictures of loved ones are for. Or, for some people, a mirror. %)

Are you one of those "price-of-everything-but-value-of-nothing" sort of people?
Allowing players to customize their pilot's image allows creative expression, which is something that enhances immersion. Once player profiles go public, it also places a face to the name and gives character to the game.

I don't think i am of that sort; i am "dissect and analyze to the bone" sort of people, i guess.
I guess you're right and for some players, reasons you list might be important and desirable. For me, these are not, though. I wonder how many of players are in the same boat i am. But anyhows, yeah, well, if some folks want that simple feature, for said reasons, then sure, it's ok, i guess.
If you wonder why exactly said reasons are not any important to me,
- enhances immersion? This might be, but i'd say, not for everyone - perhaps for minority, only, - and by a tiny bit for those at best. In my case, there is no immersion. I don't "RP" in MWO. It's a game, and i take it as a game. Not as a virtual "life" to "live". I guess i am too rational and old...
- places face to the name? Me, i get enough from the name already. Joe is Joe and Jack is Jack, i don't need their faces to know who's who;
- creative expression? Seriously? Well, may be, but it'd be so little and small expression in compare to things i usually consider as significant creative expression that it really seems too little a reason to me... I mean, in compare to things like
