It says I need to purchase all basic efficiencies for 3 variant of this chassis to unlock elite. Does this mean I have unlock 3 different mechs of the SAME CLASS or SAME MODEL?

For example unlocking all basics of 3 different medium mechs in order to get elite efficiencies or does it mean I have to unlock all basics for 3 different kinds of hunchbacks to get the elite skills.

No, you need to unlock basics on 3 variants of the 3 chassis.

Example: If you want to get elites on an Atlas, you need to purchase and get all the basics on 3 of the 4 Atlas variants.

I'll add that you can only spend exp on mechs you own, so don't sell until you are done leveling them or you will have to rebuy.

You need 3 mechs of the same chassis to be basic'd in order to unlock elite - ie. 3 variants of the Jenners, the D,F,K. Once they are all elite'd, you get double basics and the opportunity to finish off master and get the extra module.

Once you have this first set of 3 mechs mastered, you can begin to level other mechs in that weight class ie. Raven 3L, 2X, 4X. However, now, once you have all 3 mechs of the next chassis basic'd, you can go all the way up to master and get that last module without having to elite the other 2 chassis.

You can do this for each weight category.
