Get the TeamSpeak3 client from here and check out the community voice server thread. The Comstar NA and Comstar EU servers (post #2 in the linked thread), plus the NGNG Outreach server (post #3 in the linked thread) will have lots of random people to drop with, as well as lots of units to join if you're looking for that.

You will notice that many player organizations (be they house/faction players or mercenary units) recruit and many of them welcome new players, too.
The House Forums even have their own recruitment sub-forums for each house. Maybe there is a unit that sparks your interest.

As others have posted...Comstar is by far your best bet for finding good pick up groups and potentially finding a clan if into that sort of thing (na1.mech-connect.net pass: WordofBlake).
