I wanted to create this thread to come up with ideas to balance one thing against another. So we don't end up with a game that's dominated by snipers or heavy mechs.

So here's the first idea, how to deal with snipers. We know these are going to be big maps, some urban areas will help reduce fire from them but snipers are a big problem.

Create a system that other mechs can use to triangulate a sniper's location. One shot taken gets a pilots attention. In Batman Arkham Asylum/City if Batman threw more than one batarang from the same location the enemy would know where he was. Letting a pilot start a program to allow him to track any further shots to try and triangulate his location.

In Battlefield BC:2/3, once you have a persons location "spotted" you could employ a mortar strike against them. The dropships could act as the point of attack for this. You have narrowed down the location of the sniper by a section of the map you can complete the program and launch the attack.

The program used would require the sniper shooting 3 times at one mech for the launch of a mortar strike to be available. This way a sniper either has to learn to shoot on the move (which is difficult) or to shoot a few times then displace and find another location. Otherwise they are inviting a very unpleasant party to fall on their heads.

I hope this thread really helps the developers to use the ideas and enrich the game they want to create.

They have already mentioned that maps will be mostly urban settings. And they also mentioned that they were aware of how MW4 was pretty much a load up on ERLL's or PPC's and snipe away with little worry about heat and that they wanted to make sure MWO wasn't like that. MW4 suffered from weapons balance, lack of heat playing a factor and weapon slots that let you "boat" out a mech.

Better weapons balancing and having to fight in the city would certainly make it hard to sit back and snipe. There opportunites would become more rare. Also heat and weapon slots would further limit pure sniping. Although all things being equal it takes more skill to fight at range than it does to walk up on somebody and smash them with AC's. I thought MPBT3025 had this more in balance than MW4.

If you fire a weapon, you should appear on the enemy's radar, like in Battlefield 2. That would reveal snipers that stay in a position for too long.

Also, sniping isn't particularly effective in Battletech Tabletop, so I'm not convinced it will be a problem in MWO.

As for heavy mechs, using a Battlevalue system would ensure that both sides have the native capability to defeat each other with the gear they brought, so having lots of smaller mechs or fewer larger mechs.
