The JJs are able to let you turn pretty quick to protect your back.
And I would consider getting an XL engine. An XL 325 works nicely.
Edit: adding build link.

I think that I actually like this idea the best.
At first, I laughed at the thought of sticking an XL engine in an assault mech. But then I realized that, if I lost my right torso, I might as WELL be dead as I just lost about 90% of my firepower. lol
Edit: Though I may swap out a little leg armor and add it to my left arm, as I'll be using that arm to shield myself while on weapon cooldown.

You could lose an ST early that is certainly a risk, but I've often been cored out or had my most of my armor stripped off by that time anyway. JJs and torso twist.
Highlanders are surprisingly survivable with XLs, and if one is not using SRMs on the left side then there's less risk anyway since good players tend to try to focus down that right ST anyway, and the Streaks are more to harass lights anyway.
Stalkers and Atlas' are the ones that certainly are fail with XLs, IMHO.

I disagree.
I've been running this HGN with XL the whole time:
HEAVY METAL 119 69 50 1.38 194 67 2.90 61,457 122,048
12:04:26
Not my best mech but one of my better ones.
Running XL325, 2LLas, 1UAC/5, 1AC5, 2ASRM6's. Best rounds are around 1200dmg in this thing.
BTW OP, looks like a build worth trying and see how it goes from there. Nothing wrong with it, the suggestion to the change with the XL 325 looks good too.

There are some mechs that you should NEVER run XL's in this isn't one of them, different builds work with XL and some well with STD.

I may swap out the streak 2's for an ASRM 6 and ASRM 4 later. I haven't really played around with streaks much, so I wanted to give them a shot.

They're useful for hammering lights, but not so much the bigger mechs. Putting 12-18 SRMs into the CT of an enemy assault with an AC/20 is a good way to quickly end a fight. The Streaks? They'll hit arms and legs more often than Torso.

The problem with the Highlander is if you loose all the weapons on your left side (left torso destruction fro example) you end up with this... not really much use to the team is it?
Thats the man reason why an XL in a Highlander isnt such a bad idea. it has Jumpjets so that means it is also maneuverable enough to easily spread damage across all 5 (8 if you count rear armor) upper torso sections.

Depends. If I lose my AC and my lasers I've still got 16 SRM tubes. That's worth something.
