Let's say there are 5 points of armor left and the area is shot with a single point damage weapon like an AC20. Does the remaining 15 points go through to the internal structure? Or is it considered expended on the armor?

How about damage over time weapon like lasers?

If damage doesn't go through for weapons like AC20 and PPcs, it would be more efficient to tear out remaining thin armor using lasers or smaller weapons before hitting with a big gun.

Anyone?

Excess damage is applied to the internal structure once armor is breached. So, if you have 5 points or armor left on your Locusts's left torso and eat an AC/20 round, you're going to have little bits of Locust kibble scattered across the landscape.

Additionally, any critical hits are calculated using the weapon's base damage, not the amount of damage that goes through. Thus, if you had 16 points of leg armor on your ill-fated Locust and took a 3-hit AC/20 crit, the game would deal three "critical hits" of 20 damage each to any equipment that might be in your leg (heat sinks, ammo, or Beagles,) and inflicting 15% of that critical hit damage to your internal structure. That's a total of 4.5 added structure damage to the leg, so your call-sign will be changed to "Limpy" until you make it back to the 'mech bay (Since the leg has 8 internal structure and 16 armor.)

I'm up way past my expiration date, but I hope this was helpful.

I liked the rest of the post (I had wondered about the damage carry-over as well)
But I loved the way you phrased this :)
