seriously, you'll have to shoot at more than 3 mechs for a measley 138 damage if you want some sympathy here. You didn't do anything, so why would you get rewarded?

No one likes jerks. You can obviously see by the screenshot it is a bug as even when losing you still get exp and c-bills.

If you died by going OOB (out of bounds), you get 0 for both C-bills and XP.
So, it would be working as intended in this case. The game does not reward you for intentional or unintentional cowardice.

Well, I don't know then. I'm unsure if it also affects death by self suicide (by overheating), but you haven't really described how you died.
That is generally the only circumstance that would cause that to occur.
