I must've gone through a dozen builds on this mech before I found the fit I was looking for. I run it essentially like a gauss dragon. 1 gauss rifle, 4MLs, 2SRM6s with XL300 and ~400 armor. It's reasonably fast for a heavy mech, takes a "decent" punch (though TDRs are MUCH more durable with standards), and it punches like a mule (59pt alpha). Just make sure you're not the first one into a fight and you'll clean up.

The 5S(P) has become one of my favorite Phoenix mechs. I've settled on this build:

XL315
2 AC/2s (4T)
LL
3 MLs
Endo, DHS, etc

It's a great suppression mech. It doesn't look great on paper, but it just seems to work for me.

Same place the first one's at. It's the 5S(P) not the 5SS.

Easily rocking 5-700 dmg per round. Gotta keep near the pack, this isn't missile boat, it's a mid-range fire support that just happens to be packing LRMs instead of SRMs.

Tag+BAP+LRM30 under 250m? Stuff gets dead very quickly.

And yes, ammo in the side torso is a no-no, but I honestly burn through 3T of the LRM ammo more often than not long before I have to worry about direct engagement.

I run twin AC5s, a PPC, and a pair of medium lasers with the stock 280. It works well as a mid to short range tank. It has a fiar amount of firepower, but with a STD, it really shines when it comes to durability. Also, that PPC/AC5 combo packs a pretty solid punch.. I almost always lose both arms and a shoulder before I go down. If you don't like the PPC, you can go with a large laser and add a third medium. The LL also pairs well with the AC5s, and the third medium gives some great burst damage up close.

It took me forever to find a build I liked for this variant. Mine ended up completely different from the other two Tbolts (where I boat energy weapons and use std engines and regular structure to cram on as many DHS as possible). I ended up with a fast support mech, designed to get in quickly, put a bunch of burst damage on an engaged mech, and get out again in ~10 sec or so.

Here's the build:
315xl, AC2+UAC5, LL, 2 ML (Endo and DHS). I think I run 5 tons of ammo in total, 3 tons UAC, 2 tons AC2. Your main punch is located in the arms, which can be a problem for convergence with the Tbolt's extremely wide arms. At first, I somewhat frequently hit the friendly I was using for cover with the wide firing points. You get used to it after awhile though, and people generally hate getting nailed by the hail of AC fire coming out of your left arm. I've seen fully healthy Atlai run for cover because I'm plinking them at 400m.
