The first number is your FPS (in Yellow).
Below that should be two white numbers that indicate your current position. You can press F9 to toggle this on or off.

Is it the number above that I've circled in red? If it is then, as LauLiao said, that's your FPS (frames per second).
Could be that you accidentally hit F9 which is why it has suddenly appeared.

for fraps the default location is (or was ) the upper left hand corner of any open running application that uses the video card.

What is FRAPS? This only started today, I've been playing about 2 months, and the only difference is I updated JAVA today

You might have hit a button that activated your frames per second ticker. Check your graphics driver for settings and details.
