It's not just joysticks and seems to be highly mech dependant. Leveled Trebs are almost impossible to aim long distances because even the pulse in your hand moves the recticle for the arms a great deal. I wish I could unlevel them so they would be more playable.

Some Joysticks like the Logitech's have good profilers that allow you to adjust sensitivity.
What you can do now is create a user.cfg file with a text editor and place it in your C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online folder or wherever your \MechWarrior Online folder is located.
The User.cfg file allows you to adjust the sensitivity, gain, and deadzone of the axii. It takes a little fiddling with, but you end up with reasonable control, although the turn axis is always too jumpy to me.
Raising Sensitivity makes the Joystick respond to small movements more sensitively and raising Gain makes the Joystick respond faster to full throws of the Joystick.
Here is the text you will have in a typical User.cfg
The invert commands are 0 for no invert and 1 for invert.
Here is Paul's post on it, ALL JOYSTICK USERS
Likely you will want to tailor it to your Joystick.
Also, the normal setup for MechWarrior in previous games is to have the X axis control Mech-Turn and the RZ (twist) axis control Torso-Twist. This allows you to circle strafe and aim at the same time easily. MWO has these two axii reversed by default for some reason.

I'm still using a Microsoft Precision II joystick. While it is adequate for play with a tweaked user.cfg it still drives like a pickup truck as compared to MW4's corvette. Not very useful for play against/with lights or the precision shooting as allowed by a mouse.
I wish MWO would direct some expertise to us joystick users, maybe adding a per axis sensitivity slider/variable.
Also getting tired of going "all stop" when I chat or bring up the battle map. (I really wish they would enable the battle map on another screen or overlay.)

I'd love nothing more than to dust off my ol' Sidewinder for MWO!
No port to plug the thing in anymore though and I'm gradually getting the hang of this mouse-aiming business..
I'll doubt I'll ever be as effective with this poxy new gaming mouse/KB combo mind you. (Thankyou wife!
)
I could vary the amount of turn on my mech to throw off opponents aim who were circling me, whilst still holding them in my crosshair via the torso-twist and still have all my weapon groups under each finger!
Left the other hand controlling throttle/zoom/bacon sandwich/beer control!
The more I read about other players fighting for joystick usage, the more I wanna go out and get me a USB adapter and seriously devastate the KB/Mouse brigade!

Yep, I had to use a joystick as soon as the game would recognize it. Mouse Speedpad removes to much spontenaity I guess. I like being able to pull off split second piloting decisions, even if it's just go left or right.
Once you learn to play MechWarrior Online with a joystick you will never go back to the mouse/keypad.

Yes, I have seen some games with this setup. That would be cool in MWO. I agree piloting a Light mech is very hard to do with a joystick in MWO. Maybe Lights need a special User.cfg file for now?
