I've been playing MWO since whenever it says next to my name. It used to be UACs would default to multi-fire. Then when it was replaced to single, it was stated, many times, that macros were fine.
But I don't wish to use a separate macro program to play a game. I shouldn't have to. You can totally say that good finger-tapping can approach the ability of macros. So if you devote yourself to timing a game you can nearly reach the level of a basic macro.
If the devs say it's fine, and just about everyone recognizes there is some benefit, why not add it? You shouldn't have to paint on your own camo with photoshop or design your own mech's actuators with autocad.
Some mechs have an extra toggle for weapon door. Have a toggle for manual or fast-fire. You could even make it part of the chainfire process, though that might be confusing.

Why would you use a macro to fire uac's? You can only fire one extra shot between regular shots, and timing doesn't matter. So long and you can click your fire button twice every weapon cycle, maximum DPS is yours
Till it jams, anyways.

I use a Macro typically for the lulz. A smaller effect is a slight improvement to ammo efficiency since I can fire "just a few" instead of all of them with the same mouse button.
But it's really just because it's fun. If all weapons had the same behavior as lasers when chained, I think macros would all but disappear for everyone save those without fast fingers and/or those without 5+ buttons on their mouse.
