To OP:

Yes.

Atlas is bad.

The only version worthwhile is the DDC for it's ECM, but apart from that every other assault in the game and even most mediums can out fight the Atlas.

This is because the Atlas has the worst traits of any mech in the game.

Low agility, slow speed, Low mounted weapons (This kills you the most) and poor arm range.

If I had my way I would go back and completely change the Atlas to something that is a bit more worthwhile, preferably without the gigantic mech diaper.

2nd row first mech or 3rd row 2nd mech.

Both design have the AC significantly higher up than the our current version.

atlas is the best assault in the game, however with that in mind its not specialized towards any specific role, except the role where things that get close to it die, and because its not a particularly good boat many will call it bad because the meta in this game is essentially; stack as many weapons of the same type as you can.

personally? i like to keep my as7-d as close to original loadout as possible. do not drop the lrm 20, a little indirect fire can make all the difference. However if you do drop the lrm-20, the only replacement is lots of srm's.

but to answer your question, the atlas can be a waste of money if you dont like the following things

1. slow

2. big

3. difficult to boat

4. difficult to counter good lights

some will argue the ddc is the only worthwhile atlas but I disagree. ECM is a powerful ally, but being able to fight after your left and right torso has been stripped can be the difference between a win or a loss. I'd say of all the atlases, if you like to lone wolf then the ddc is the only acceptable atlas because you will be guaranteed an ecm on your team always.

I found (if your heat is good enough) 2 LRM10 are more useful than 1LRM20, better ROF, and the option of Chain-firing them.

The absolute worst advice I received when I first started playing this game was "Get a D-DC". I've since mastered all the Atlases (except the K), so I know firsthand how hard they are to be successful in, especially solo PUGing. However, if you can get two or three teammates to work with you, you can absolutely wreck house with any of the Atlases.

This thread is full of excellent advise on how to rockstar in an Atlas.

Atlas is walking armor, but does not have the best firepower.

Most of the time you can slug it out with another well built mech and win, coming out badly damaged, but this is not desirable in a 12vs12 battle.

The problem with being new and being in an Atlas is you won't really have experience at how to position yourself... so you'll be getting shot to pieces by enemies who can manuver. The Atlas is big and slow.

You might try an articulated mech like the Stalker-3F or Catapult-K2 at 1st, because the high firing points helps offset some inexperience at positioning behind cover.

I run my atlas d and dc with ac20, 2x llas, 2x lrm15, beagle. Lrms are not used hanging at back, but softening targets up while blasting targets with ac20 and llas. Works pretty well for me and has decent range. I don't like srms for my atlas, but it is just a personal taste. I feel that lrms are more versatile weapon than srms.
