After I click on the Social tab and then add a person as a friend, it says person successfully added, but then my friends list still remains empty. I can't seem to be able to add people to my friends list. Is there something wrong with my installation of MWO? Everything else seems to be running fine though, no crashes whatsoever.

did you try moving to a different tab and back again. And did that person accept your invite?

I did try changing tabs, but no effect. Ah, I wasn't aware that the person had to accept my invite. That seems to be the problem then.

This. It says that you successfully sent them an invite, not that you added them. Basically it prevents you from stalking people without their consent.
