Buy yourself a good game controller, not a Joystick, not a Xbox controller. Don't stick to the keyboard and mouse as you have to reprogram buttons in settings and you have to look to see what you are doing most of the time.

Instead spend the money to pick up one of the following, either new or used. I've gotten a few off ebay that had such low usage you'd swear they were never out of the box. If you seriously want to make this game better and less work then you need to buy one of the following game controllers.

The N52 Part # F8GFPC100- Nostromo's second coming of the palm rested mini programmable keyboard with a directional pad and the ability to have 4 maps on it (Red,Green,Blue, and no color). This was the first one I bought 12 years ago and my oldest uses it still.

The N52te Part # RZ07-00490100-R3U1- Razer took this over from Belkin after collaborating to take the N52 to the next level, which in my opinion actually hurt the product by reducing the number of maps from 4 to 3 (Red,Green,Blue) but gave it Superior software for programming all the buttons. This is what I currently use for all my gaming needs. MWO, MWLL, War Thunder, Star Citizen. This is the one I recommend to all who want a new device and refuse to buy used. Great price, lasts for years (my N52te is now 6 years old and was actually the Belkin model F8GFPC200) and will serve you well for lots of games for years to come.

Stay away from...

The Razer Tartarus - Razer's supposed replacement for the N52te is a more angular design with a major flaw in the gel filled palm rest. It can leak and the goo coming out is nasty! Also this model has quality issues with fitment and you run the risk of keys rubbing together enough to cause them to stick, click, or bind when you don't want them too.

The Razer Orbweaver - Razer's over the top monster! Built to provide you with greater ability to program more buttons and have a comfortable palm rest, this device is plagued by the same issues as the cheaper Tartarus. Goo leaking out of palm rest, keys sticking, rubbing and it'll cost you twice the amount of the Tartarus to have 5 more keys and the same build quality issues. I actually had high hopes for this device and I'm still hopeful that Razer can get wiser and remove the Goo pad and get the QC under control.

So in closing these are the game pads I've looked into and have used. This one device programed comfortably and sensibly can improve your game, make you less crazy about looking at your keyboard, and give you even more time to find something wrong with MWO to complain about on the forums!

I hope this helps some of you find a better way to play!

I've been playing for almost a year and a half and I never had to rebind any keys. The default keyboard layout is fine.

I wouldn't mind a nice Belkin though.

I know a few "pros" use the Razer, I'm sticking with a mechanical gaming keyboard for now.. I don't want to have peripherals everywhere like when I was a sim racer with the wheel here the pedals there.. xD

I've had a few guys who've had to reset keys after a patch, which is why I made the point.

Imo all you need is a mouse with four buttons (minimum) and to rebind your most used keys to ones you can reach easily from WASD.

Edit: Typo

I have one of the Belkin N52's here. Didn't really help my game nearly as much as a good flight throttle. Everyone is different, I'm sure. But for me, the N52 wasn't the game-changer.

A mouse with two thumb buttons is probably the best investment you can make. Oh ya, and rebind your override shutdown key to something near your WASD configuration.

I found it amusing that one thinks a gaming peripheral enhances performance.

Sort of like when people say; "Guns kill people" no they dont, the person holding it is doing the killing, if I set my rifle outside it doesn't kill anyone, either that or its a lazy arse rifle.

My razer mechanical keyboard and razer mouse work just fine, I haven't rebound a key since having to re-download the client when Open beta released.

I haven't had to rebind keys because I just adapted to the standard key loadout, as I typically do for games.

I like the idea of some of the small gaming controller setups, but become accustomed to that setup means becomes unaccustomed to the setup used in 99% of gaming PC setups, a standard keyboard and mouse. For the time being, I'd rather just use the setup that's standard. It's the same reason I still use a QWERTY keyboard, despite it not being designed for efficient typing. It's a small concern, perhaps, but the advantages of such a controller are also small.

Maybe some day I'll transition, but for now I just don't see the meager net advantages as being worth the cost of the device.

I have the Nostromo and absolutely love it! I'm trying to find a different mouse though. Reference my thread here: http://mwomercs.com/...oystick-hybrid/

Input is appreciated, thanks.
