No time was darker when everything was about frontloading damage.

That time never ended. Newbies just got scared about it, and a lot of pugs run horrific configs like AC/2 + ML + SRM + LRM or something ludicrous. The more guns change, the more they stay the same.

That said, balance DID improve. It really did, in that period between announcing Phoenix and "release." It then got dropped like a rock, it seems like, almost immediately. After 8 months of a gap before while literally nothing happened, I think folks have a very strong reason to be concerned.

Because the Battletech Universe wasn't imagined and created around the concept of the fluff pilots pushing one button and watching their enemies melt. Unfortunately, due to both game design and laziness on the part of players, which sadly gets dressed up and disguised as efficiency and skill, everyone wants to Alpha every target they see. Then, they winge and moan about ghost heat when it is their own play style which created the hinderance that they hate so much.

My gods. Perfectly worded.

I love my Jester!

2x ERPPC
2x Flamer
1x JJ
2 tonnes of AMS ammo
STD 280

It was a bit rough at first, since I was trying many different builds (and blowing wayyy too many C-Bills!). But, once I unlocked some efficiencies, and settled into a build that I liked, I was consistently pulling ~400 dmg games with 2-3 kills.

Heat scale does nothing to penalize any mech, weapon system, or build. The ONLY thing it "limits" is WHEN you fire your weapons.

Edit: Man I can't spell >_<

I would add that players also want in general to place a disproportionately huge amount of weapons on their mechs.

Right. Because the goal isn't to kill enemy mechs. It's to prance around tickling each other to death.

Then, they whine and moan about Alpha capacity when it is their own play style which got them killed in the first place.

So I see the new hero 'mech, the Jester, is an all energy Catapult.

This would be fine if you could, say, run 4 large lasers or the like on it. But no, thanks to Ghost Heat, the only way to effectively do something like that is with external macros.

In fact, the ONLY way you can fill the slots on the Jester is to either go horribly mismatched guns (2 Large, 2 PPC, 2 other lasers) or medium style (2 large 4 meds) and both are garbage.

With the limits on PPC/Large Lasers starting at 2, this makes energy boats a stupid waste of time - including curb stomping already down on their luck boats like the Awesome.

Unless some kind of override limit is put in for energy boats.. I wish they'd just stop producing them because they are less than worthless.

Interesting.

I was just in a match where 3 Jesters did 720, 540 and 450 damage. The 720 had 2 kills and 8 assists. Load outs seemed to vary between LL, ERLL, PPC, ERPPC and some variations. In other words, they were very effective. Perhaps these builds are garbage for you but some folks seem to be able to use them effectively.

What is particularly interesting about the Jester is that it can do this while running across the battlefield at about 95kph, jumping over obstacles (and jump sniping) and equipping dual AMS which really seems to help with LRM spam.
