Honestly, with all these "Don't add Clans, they'll be unfair/unbalanced!" threads, I think everybody here's forgetting the basic fact that, since the timeline's already been announced as taking place in 3049, there is no point complaining about it or trying to change it.
No matter which side of the fence you sit on, it is completely unreasonable to expect any amount of pressure or complaining, no matter how well thought out, to change this decision. Given that the game is going to launch in less than a year, demanding such a drastic change is impossible without forcing them to push the launch date back several months at the least. Besides, given how quickly this game is going to launch (at most 10 months after announcement), it's more than likely that a lot of, if not most of, the work has already been done, so everything that you're arguing over is already a done deal.
And again, it all comes down to what Piranha wants to do with their game; after all, they're the ones who are making it. They probably already have an idea of how they want to balance things, and if something doesn't work out then they have the ability to fix it. The community has every right to provide feedback, but it is not entitled to tell the developers what to do before the game has even come out. Nobody's seen anything about how any of this might be balanced, so everything is pretty much speculation; again, what's the point?
The way people are arguing and counter-arguing this, all I see are a bunch of spoiled kids who are throwing tantrums because they didn't get exactly what they wanted. If you don't like it, then tough luck, you can always just not play the game.
Yes, I know, common sense, but it seems to have been lacking its own thread, whereas we've had at least half a dozen arguing about the merits of including or not including the Clans within the last couple days alone.

It's up to the developers what they want to do

True enough. Everybody should just chill out instead of mentally wrestling with the thought that something they want might not be in the game (or vice versa).

While I must agree with the detractors in that I think the game will face a lot fewer balance issues if we were to simply have it take place during the succession wars, I can see from Piranha's perspective (or is it the publisher's perspective) of how a Mechwarrior game without using the Timberwolf cash-cow would be an unsound decision.
...But just so long as they don't start taking too many liberties, like including designs that were not supposed to be around during said time period, for the sole reason that they're popular.
Overall though, I'm more concerned with the mechanics. They could say the Thanatos and Madcat Mark II were from the star league for all I care, granted that they keep the game close enough to the Tabletop mechanics that I could take any player of MWO a month after release, sit him down with the Battletech 25th anniversary edition introductory box, and he will not feel alienated - unlike those who are introduced to the franchise through Mechwarrior 4, Mechcommander, or MechAssault.

Ok, I know what you all are saying. I just hope they stay true to the current and already well developed story-line.

< a logical conclusion> (question? how much of the 2009 project has been transfered or input into the current MWO project?)
please dont forget that mention has been made of constantly updating DLC

<correct> the point? i'm guessing "dev-feedback, product awareness, and market "hype", hopefully translating into enhanced income revenue at, and after product launch. besides, it also provides a pool of people willing to sign a NDA and work for free when they need the beta testing done."

erm? did you take "/brutal honesty" as a secondary skill?
(myself, i'd have phrased it in a slightly more polite tone, to keep the trolls at bay)

sadly common sense is a rare yet truely wonderful thing on the average internet forum, the people here are above that level (so far) thankfully.
it would be nice if the topics all got threaded into one topic, but i guess "moderators coming soon" or similar post i recall seeing may cover that.
generalizing in the widest possibly way here, but people getting passionate about a subject usually indicates an interest for, and hopefully, "willing to stick their hand in their pocket for" said subject matter.
on the "humerous speculation" side of things, a common sense thread posted on Day1 , would probably be deleted, bottom of the list, or trolled to death, by Day2
