So im looking for a new medium mech, and im looking at getting a kintaro. Is he worth it at all? I'v already mastered centurion, and im itching to start a new medium mech. Also, is it a good idea to runn him with an XL? im normally religiously against using xl's, but if its obvious to use one, i would. Any tips or advice welcome.

Thanks!

Wait for shaowhawks, unless you really love streakboats.

Yes, the Kintaro is definitely worth it. I'm not a fan of streaks as the main weapon system but there are plenty of streaktaros out there. If you do get a Kintaro XLs are not only safe but strongly recommended. I usually run a XL320 or XL300 in mine.

You can Streakboat in a SHD-2D2 pretty well. It's great for crit-seeking or putting fear into light jocks.

I advise waiting for the Shadowhawks next month. Just top notch mechs, overall.

Im not a fan of missiles in general, but i love the kintaro. They boast the most armor for medium mechs atm .and they can take a beating really well. I personally dont think XL's are good in them as they take away allot of potential to stick around from the mech. They are brawlers and are going to be upfront. the standard 275 in them is really all they need as they start off going 81 kph before speed tweak.

If you go the streak boat route, XL is going to be the engine you want. Your job is to chase down and engage lights and mediums, so speed is the key.

My advice: Make sure you get Artemis and BAP. Stay away from Jagers, Victors, and Highlanders. Keep your pod bay door closed. Conquest is probably going to be the most rewarding mode for you.

Well worth the cbills, my 18 has a xl360 and pleanty of heatsinks and ammo, i generally do 600 - 900 damage a match and if its lots of lights i get plenty of kills, but you will learn fast who to fight and who not to. if its heavier then a dragon i dont take on alone, its not that you are going to get killed alot with all the tweeks you will be doing almost 117kph, it just takes for ever to pick away armor on heavier mechs.

Depends if you like mechs that don't jump. I have a Kintaro and so far I absolutely hate it. It has some good features as others have pointed out, but you're a very big target for a medium armoured mech and you can't follow a Spider who leaps over terrain to get away.

Personally, I'd wait till next month for the Shadowhawks. The 2D2 can pretend to be a Kintaro, and all of them can pull off a variety of interesting builds. The three Kintaros are all pretty much the same.

If you really like missiles though, ultimately the Kintaro will end up being more fun, as they're more designed as missile boats.

Never owned one yet but facing them in the battlefield, I find them them fairly tough to kill, with a measure of zombiness, nasty SRM6 punches and fairly agile, always continuously twisting their torso and moving away. Since the patch that fixed their torso, the LRM Kintaro I see less, but more of the intended SRM packing Kintaros that love to skirmish, flank and hit you from behind with their SRMs.

The Kintaro is a quality mech. Don't get the Golden Boy.

Shadowhawk 2D2 can do almost almost everything Kintaros can do but better. In light hunting jumpjets are always an advantage.

If I recall right Shadowhawks come 20th day so just wait for em.

So car, the Shadowhawks are my favorite of the Phoenix mechs. They have a variety of good builds, and seem tougher than they should be. Plus, you can make a Streaktaro with jumpjets and a cannon.

You mean like this :P ;

Alternatively swap the SSRMs for LRM5s for real annoyance factor.

Off with the streaks! Kintaros are excellent SRM brawlers. KTO-18 is a monster of it's own, level capable of mounting 3xSRM6+2xSRM4+2ML while still going at 100 KPH. That's an alpha of 62 damage. Let me tell you, EVERYTHING melts under this kind of firepower, no matter how much it spreads. My Kintaro-18 sits on a respectable 3.29 K/D ratio. They can also be switched to LRM5 trolling builds, which are extremely effective suppressers right now. The only problems you will encounter are;
  • You need a bit of brawling experience and "instincts" to make it to the brawling range in the current sniping meta. Sometimes, you will not have the chance to manhandle an Atlas, as the game will be decided by poptarts long before a brawl occurs. This means unlike PPC/AC sporting mechs which can participate in this, you will die before unleashing that mighty alpha properly.
  • SRM hit detection is horrid at it's best, and they are especially hard to aim at fast moving targets. Think of SRM'l like they're extremely slow AC20 rounds.
  • (But then again, if you're fed up with poptarts/snipers; switch to LRM5 builds and troll the poptarts yourself)
If you're OK with these, go ahead! Kintaros are probably my most potent medium brawlers. I consistently pull about 600 damage in them. Just don't ruin them by putting ERLL/PPC on them. A cute Locust dies every time someone tries to snipe with Kintaros.
