In the German military you salute with your left arm if your right one is impaired (read: broken, in a sling, immovable).

If you don't believe me and in case you speak German, you can read up on this in the Zentrale Dienstvorschrift ZDv 3/2, No 220.

i mostly use those

/0 (straight right arm to the head, the german military salute... left arm you say? no, that guy is watching YOU )

and 0/ (waving friendly with the LEFT arm, not to confuse with \0, which would be the "politically incorrect" form )
