Was reluctant to share this build because it is so good, I didn't want to fight others using it.

The LRM20 and LRM10 combo is to fully use the 20 and 10 missile tube hardpoints.
This is a rare heavy mech build that has both decent LRMs and short range abilities.
What do you think of it?

Hmm not bad, but not what I'd personally call 'super versatile'. It's just my personal preference but I'd drop the ams and a ton of LRM ammo, and swap the STD 300 for a XL 300 to add an AC 10, and lastly up the leg armor a bit (lights love chewing on drumsticks  ).

Like so: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...7f3b23bed5b67ed

Again this is just how I'd run a build like this, so it all depends on your playstyle.

Edit: Oh and this build does also run hotter than your original build, so careful heat management is required.

Not bad a build. Not too fond of XL engines personally, but its a matter of taste.

The reason for calling it super versatile is that its got speed, decent indirect fire and direct fire capabilities with plenty of ammo, decent heat sinks and even AMS!

You can have an extremely different playstyle with this mech in every match depending on the situation.
In some maps you can spend the whole match LRMing, just using the MLs to raze lights that hunt you.
On others, you can soften up targets with LRMs, then go in to finish them with the MLs.

I find that the Orions are reasonably XL friendly, but like you said its a matter of taste  And I have a personal love for the AC 10 :) in my experiance its a good versatile weapon with good poking range and brawling capabilities. It needs more love

I'm really curious to see what effect the "thong" will have on the Orion. Well know on Tuesday!

Needs the AC10 or at least 2 LLs instead of 2 MLs to be called versatile. With plain MLs for backup, it is a simple LRM boat, not super strong with 30 tubes. Consider LRM30+2xLL+2xML with the XL325 engine.

Looks nice, but heat efficiency is too low for my taste. Not saying its bad, just my playstyle preference.

Actually when using this build, its quite common to fire both LRMs and MLs at around 180-300m.
It wrecks targets fast.

It's decent, I like it. You are better off trying to keep your range though, ML's will deter lone lights and kill wounded mechs, but anything other than that and you won't have enough firepower to make it out alive. STD engine means you will soak up a hell of damage before going down though. Still, it's a potent second line support.

If you ignore LRM's(remove them in smurfy) you get 71% cooling efficiency which means you can pretty much fire(alpha) those ML's for a very long time. Heck, 16 DHS is a bit of an overkill for 4ML's.

Orion 1-K = Catapult C1 + ammo + heat sinks + armor + lasers all in arm slots.

Orion's a fun mech that can accommodate quite a few different playstyles. I enjoy an AC/20, 2 MLas, 2 LLas, maxed armor, and a STD 280 engine. Second-line brawler that finishes off mechs easily, and has enough armor to hang with Assaults for a little while.

ac/20 + 2 srm 6s + 2 MLS

Or

Ac/20 + 2 LLs

I have found those to be my most effective builds (keeping the stock engine)

Gotta get that AMS ammo out of the chest, it's just waiting to blow.

Remember, ammo draws from top down. What's in the head, arms, and torso is used before the legs. That means if you HAVE to store ammo somewhere other than the legs and head, make sure to put the stuff that will be used most and fastest (in your case, LRMs) in the torso, while stuffing the longer lasting ammo in the legs or head (in most matches you won't use all your AMS, let alone use it quickly).

You seem to be focusing on LRMs, which is fine, but it's a shame you haven't done everything you can to capitalize on them. I always recommend trying to sneak in Artemis and BAP if most of your damage is coming from LRMs. Try this.

It's your build but with a little less LRM ammo, some armour shaved from the head and arms, but alternative AMS ammo placement, Art, and BAP. I know most people just try to cram as many LRMs as they can into a build, but I really believe that having more EFFECTIVE missiles is better than having just MORE missiles.
