Who says you need 4 of em? If you really want them for that type of gameplay (dropship I believe you're talking about, not grouping right?), then get some Premium Time/Hero Mechs or wait out the grind.
Edit: So far I haven't even bought a single module, even though I unlocked a bunch. I play legit.

Ok, so... you're going to want four of them. You do realize your going to want four of the same class of mech right to go with that?

What about the other modules? I have 4 sets of seismic sensor, sensor range, and target gathering, as well as 3 target decay modules. I use the 4-square ready list to keep track of where my modules are at in anticipation of dropship mode.

Given you unlock modules with a cr4pload of gxp I agree that once unlocked you simply should be able to select from a list of the unlocked ones which one to equip for free, as it is now it's a tax for sure.
That said dropship mode is imho quite far away in the future (who knows when it will be available for real), so you'll be able to grind for each set of sensors..

That's CW, which is different from (although related to) UI 2.0

If you can't afford it, don't play CW. You gotta pay to play.

It really depends on the 12 man, doesn't it? I could see the drop commander limiting the people who had seismic to a handful of mechs, so others can carry modules for other purposes (UAV, arty/air strikes, etc).

Not worried at all,
I stopped trying to put a module in every mech months ago. I settled on 4 of each back then. I am waaaaaaaay too lazy to swap modules out of mechs every single time I change. I know consumables are really popular and folks use them to great effect. But I am too lazy to refill that **** in between matches. I just make sure I have enough modules to kit out my 4 selected mechs.

Modules and fitting mechs with them are considered the endgame in MW:O and you should keep that in mind. You still got plenty of time to grind enough C-Bill to fully module up four BattleMechs if you wish to do so.

You could just take one mech... If that is all the mechs you can fit at the same time.

I think for those of us who want to succeed in CW having multiple modules wouldn't be a problem. Which, honestly, I don't intend to sound elitist, just that it's a fact of being "good" at any game at the highest levels.
Besides, just sitting on top of digital c-bills doesn't do much. Better to have them doing something for you like providing loadout options than hanging out in my hangar.
