I am not really a "new" player, but I just noticed the activation button next to premium time add button!! I just was curious, but I clicked it, and it wanted to know if I wanted to activate my premium time...I been buying premium time for a while now, and it just automatically starts countin down.
So what is the activation thing all about??

It is my understanding that PT you buy through the in-game shop starts automatically, and PT you get from things such as the Phoenix Package you have to activate manually.

Everyone who logged in during the last 3 months got a free day of premium with yesterdays patch. Already added in game so just click activate and then OK to the Acknowledgement.

It was designed originally for those who purchased founders packs. At the time many had the question 'does it start at OB?'. This concerned many as they may not be playing at the time or simply may want to wait until the game was more complete/stable. So they added the activate button.
Now it is being used for situations like this last patch where we were all given a day of premium. So again the choice is available as to when you would like to activate the premium time.

you can always safely click the activate button, which brings up a pop-up listing how many days you have in the pool with cancel and accept buttons.

Let me get this straight...

I have the premium time with my Overlord pack. If I was to buy premium time through the game interface, say 1 day, it would automatically activate the one day but not the banked premium time? I would have to activate the banked time separately?

Correct.
