Do the AMS bullets use the same hit registration code, and if yes, does that mean wonky HSR can lead to AMS totally missing? Or is it some kind of automagic shield that deducts X missiles per AMS per second once they reach AMS range?

There is no magic in MechWarrior.

It's RNG baby! On average, it shoots down 1/4 of a missile volley. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

60% of the time it works every time.

NB the rate of fire for both the AMS and the machine gun is buggy as junk. There are videos by Koniving up on the forums showing that these 10.00000 shot per second weapons can vary between 7 and 13 shots per second...
Reported months ago, but hey 'working as intended', time to start fiddling with artemis.

treat ams like any other weapon and while using consider its position within your mech, if the torso has wrong alignment to incoming missiles it seems less effective in my experience. also if your in an elevated location and missiles come in low its less effective.

My experience is it will knock out 3-4 missles per LRM volley on average. Meaning if someone's lobbing LRM5s at you, they are almost completely ineffective, but dual LRM20s will still be mostly effective. Sometimes it hits more, sometimes it hits less.
SRM/SSRMs can be hit by AMS as well, but that's a bit less reliable.

Grouped AMS will shoot the same missiles.... Working as intended ..

Each AMS fires off 15 rounds per volley coming at it. It will kill 1-5 missiles per second. And yes, mulitple AMS launchers will fire at the same missile volley. It does prioritize firing at volleys aimed at you.
Now, if you ever want to cause an AMS launcher to go insane (and run out of ammo quickly) toss an LRM 15 in a Narc Launcher.

I actually got a reply from a dev that there is no overlap between multiple AMS systems as far what they shoot down. I'll try to find the post but it was awhile ago.
It's possible that AMS is just a particle effect like machine gun fire and what we see isn't necessarily what is happening.
Wow actually found it.

A little vague. Maybe we can PM him and get him to elaborate.

Between carrying AMS on almost ALL of my mechs as well as trying to stay mobile when LRMs are inbound, goes a long way to not being hit at all or significantly. Keep your eyes peeled for LRM fire as well as trying to stay close to cover and this will help AMS considerably.
AMS alone can be quite effective against smaller LRM launches and sometimes nullifying all of the damage or most.
I run a Cicada for the most part and LRMs can be quite troublesome for lighter armored mechs.
As for missing? I can't honestly say, though at least from TT experience, the effects of AMS can vary greatly. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case in MWO as well. Rarely is it 100% effective, and I would say rarely does it miss completely as well.
