Being a big Orion fan since release of the mech, I have bought all and mastered...beside the ON1-M.
I just didn't know what to do with it.

After Blackjacks and phoenix mechs I'm tempted to complete my Orion stable but can't find a good build with it. Have to say, I don't want to copy one of my other Orions, it should play different.

So here is what I have today:

Protector: STD300, AC20, 3xML, 2x SRM4
ON1-K: XL325, LB-X, 4x ML, 2x SRM2
ON1-VA: XL360, AC10, 2xML, 4xSSRM2
ON1-V: STD300, 2xAC5, 2xML, 2x ASRM4

I bought the -V with the intention to build a LRM boat but LRMs in the arms are useless and overall I just didn't get it with that version. Mastered it with 2xLBX/2ML and man that was fun.

So... what to do with the -M?

I would like to run a missile boat again, but all I can come up with is 2xLRM15 with 2 ML and a tag, not really impressing if you compare to a jumpy catapult with 10 tons less weight.

Maybe just some punch with a single LRM20 as backup? 3xLRM5 to use that CT hardpoint?

Everytime I start tweaking on smurfy I land in an SRM config, or worse in a dead end. So please help me :)

I'd like to keep the engine if I buy it, but I have a spare STD300, too.
So 300 rating, no matter if xl or not would be nice, but not mandatory

I don't own any orions yet (must get the shadow hawks first), but this is the build that I plan to try with ON1-M:

XL300, 2ALRM15, AC/10, 2ML, TAG

M is apparently the only orion that can fire 30 LRMs in a single salvo, and bring a tag + two backup energy weapons. I like the idea of having some ballistic direct firepower to go with the LRMs. It seems to work decently with my heavy metal (2ALRM15, gauss, 3ML). UAC/5 or two large lasers could also be worth testing with the missiles.

These are things i tried with my ON1-M. Maybe you can pick up some ideas from those.
Iirc, that 40lrm + AC5 and Long range dude worked OK-ish. The brawling ones i didn't like too much because the other Orions could do those type of builds better anyway.

Long range dude
30 LRM, AC2, 2xERLLas

LRM dude with Artemis
40 aLRM, 2x MLas, 1x AC5, TAG
Non artemis variant with bigger engine more HS
40 LRM, 2xMLas, 1xAC5, TAG

Ac20 Brawlers
AC20, 2x LLas, 1x MLas
AC20, 3x MLas, 2x SRM6

AC10 Brawler
AC10, 2x LLas, 2x SRM6, 1x MLas
AC10, 3x MLas, 2x SRM6

Looks hot... like really hot, I wouldn't take 13 DHS for 2ER-LL alone, and on thop of that those hot missiles... I bet you constantly overheat?
Just curious, why shoot the LRM5 alone?

chrx, have to say I like that build.. would swap the tag and the ML to have both Lasers on one side...

AC10+2xLL/2xPPC+whatever works on any Orion. Fill in with missiles or a big engine. But honestly, the other Orions can do whatever the M can better. I would keep the XL300 engine, and sell this variant.

To my mind, the M is the red-haired step-child of the Orion family. I bought it for the XL300, but the hardpoints aren't exactly inspiring. The only things that stand out are the CT missile point, so it's possible to zombie with a STD engine, and the 3 energy hardpoints.

The only build I've found that makes use of the M's unique features is this one:

Gauss PPC sniper with a couple of MLas for backup. Not great, but quite fun.

Otherwise, go down much the same route with any other Orion. AC10 / AC20, couple of laser and some SRMs, eg:

Yes, it's hot, but the ER LLs aren't there to alpha strike in combination with the LRMs. You will be a long range supporter and use the guns as opportunities suggests. Going pure LRMs is always a bit hard to play, because there are many times where you can not get good LRM volleys off, but you still hvae LOS, this is when the ER LLs can be used nicely.

Ok, bought that thing ;)

I decided to start with small steps, dropped the useless narc, swapped the LRM20 into the torso and added an SRM6 instead of the SRM4 and some more ammo.

Plays out quite nicely I have to say but now I'm not quite sure how to go on.
I played around with 1xGauss, 3xML and 2xLRM15 with 13DHS... should work, but I'm not sure yet...

have to get some money for endo first, anyway...

I don't have this variant, but I would probably build it around an AC-10, 2 x LLAS, TAG and some combination of XL and LRMs.

The -VA has a 15 tube and a 10 tube in each arm and so can do LRM 50. I'm feeling very similar to the OP in that I wanted something different for the -M than my other Orions. Personally I'm thinking I'll do something like ON1-M ... bearing in mind that your heat at long range is 48% which is quite decent. That and I just feel like motoring around at high speed on an Orion for once.
