I sort of rely on the sound of someone trying to ruin my day when piloting a mech. I understand the reason why sounds are muted, vacuum and all that, but one would think that a large caliber shell smacking into the side of my head would make some sort of noticeable sound... you know, how sound can travel through metal. Same with the lasers. We should at least hear the sizzle of our armor vaporizing.

People keep talking about there being "no sound" when they get hit, but I noticed the very first time I played that map that getting hit is one of the few times when there is sound. It's muted, like everything else, and if you're wailing away with your own weapons like a lunatic you probably won't notice it, but I quite distinctly heard the sound of being hit.

It's muted low enough it's barely audible, and often it's simply not happening for some damage types. Given the problems with hit registration warnings in the cockpit, sometimes it's impossible to see if you're even being damaged.
