I've put your questions/ opinions in big fat letters to make the post easy to navigate with my answers just underneath that.
If you say something like - The mechs will be ugly or overpowered - then you haven't read this post.
1 - How could such a contest be completly cheatproof?
We do not make the mech model that will be used in the game.
Instead we only make a drawing in crayon/ pencil or 3D model or even carve it out of wood...whatever works.
We could even tattoo it on our buttocks.
PGI's modelers and Alex take the contest winner and make a mech based on it from scratch.
We do not have any final say on how tall/wide it will be and they can change whatever they want.
To prevent overpowered mechs from being created there will be limitations to what kind of mech we can create. PGI will for example say -
We want this contest to be about a 45 tonn IS mech with the following configuration.
Max armor amount : 306 Maximum 5 JJ's Maximum engine size: 250
Weapon hardpoints: 3 energy, 2 Ballistic, 1 missile. 1 AMS hardpoint.
1 Energy mounted up high in the right torso.
2 Ballistics in the left arm. 1 Energy and 1 missile hardpoint in the right arm.
1 Energy in the lower left torso. 1 AMS in left torso.
Torso twist /pitch angles- 115/25 degrees. Arm yaw /pitch - 30 /30
The stock mech will be equipped with bla bla bla.
Furthermore this mech will have lowslung arm like Timber Wolf, Hellbringer, Vindicator, etc.
The cockpit will be highmounted with good viewing angles.
The mech will be a croucher type mech built low to the ground like the Adder, but with a wide and deep chest.
PGI will announce what quirks it will have at the contest announcement to prevent the coming of the heavier Huginn.
If a contestant puts overlarge arms to use as shields or extremely thin legs PGI has the right to disqualify the contestant on the spot or alter the mech to their specifications if it wins the contest.
But they have decided on how the mech will look allready.
I got no artistic freedom and i want to make at least 1 decision on the mechs capabilities.
They could allow us to make the decision whether to make bodyparts symmetrical or assymetrical.
They could also say that we can make one of the following decisions ourselves. For example.
- Mount 1 more missile hardpoint in the right arm but if we do the torso twist and pitch angle goes down to 100/20 degrees instead of 115/25 degrees.
- Mount an additional ballistic hardpoint in the upper left torso but in return the engine maximum size is reduced to 225.
I do not want a mech that didn't appear in the TT game. Why should we have one?
There are allready several mech variants in MWO that where never in the board game.
I believe the Ilya Muromets, Arrow, La Malinche, Boar's Head, Jester and a few others where made up by PGI just for MWO.
I might be wrong about some of them but the Ilya Muromets was certainly made just for MWO.
Some contestants might be tempted to just be lazy when they design their mech and just copy paste copyrighted materials.
PGI could just make us liable for such a thing by making us accept a contract that we are responsible for our own creations.
If we breach a copyright we pay the price and PGI will by no means be responsible.
Also they can keep the contest winner drawing/ 3D model out in public for a while to make certain that if it is a copyrighted mech the copyright holder will hear of it.
My favorite mech will be delayed because of this contest. Why should i allow this?
It would bring attention to MWO because it's rare to see a developer do such a thing so it would bring an influx of players.
Furthermore let's say a community member is an incredibly talented 3D modeler and he participates in this contest.
PGI might hire him whether he wins the contest or not because of his sheer talent. That would speed up the creation of new mechs a bit.
Imagine if they find another genius like Alex?
But all the mechs we send in will be so ugly there is no way Alex can make anything cool out of it.
Go to the art section in these forums. There are a lot of talented people in our community.

Why didn't you create a poll for this Spleen?
Because many players would just vote and never even start on reading my post. I want to discuss matters.
Look at TheArisen's thread about completly harmless champion weapons that would just boost Cbills/ XP/ Loyalty gains.
He specificly said that there would be no advantage beyond that for such a weapon.
They would not boost damage, range, firerate or anything like that but there is a lot who just vote no or say they don't want P2W.
Hero/special Weapons
He had a brilliant idea that could give the developers another financial leg to stand on.
A financial leg that could have extended MWO's life and allowed them to hire more staff to make new maps, mechs and who knows what else.
