Personally I prefer the Misery, but the Illya is no slouch and is certainly better in some circumstances

Ilya can do what no other mech can i.e. 3X UAC5 (and by "can" I mean it's not completely useless either). There is a lot of room for variation too and you really can't go too much wrong with ballistics being as good as they currently are. The more the better, and Ilya has enough tonnage to be able to wield an arsenal that can threaten just about anything out there.
Misery is... well, It's not quite what it used to be. Still, I think it's an excellent Assault mech, but it doesn't really offer you anything what you can't already get otherwise. I'm saying that I can recommend Misery for you only if you like the way Stalkers play (Sniping, High energy mounts etc) and want a 30% C-Bill boost while you're at it. The ballistic hard point is cool, so I guess that's one point too. If you want a Stalker with a cannon... Well, that's it. I'll post some example builds... Hope they help you decide.
Ilya:
3XUAC5: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...e5827698cb5219d
Oddball brawler: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...2abc09ba52ea380
Misery
Zombie brawler: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a55b1400c903e9d
Laserboat: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...338720845581f8f (Note that you can make this exact same build on STK-5M. So unless you definately want to play this with 30%-Cbill bonus, don't buy Misery just for this.)

You just described my Misery LOL. I never asked for a refund, I just chaulk it up to a poor decision on my part.
I think REALLY a person needs to ask themselves in this situation..."What mech class do I really prefer to pilot?" Then once you can answer that, pick your poison.
Yep, everyone has to find the right option; I preferred the DS because I was looking for a faster Highlander and a tougher CTF-3D and that thing fills the spot nearly perfectly.

Back in the day though I absolutely loved playing the Misery, and this trailer sold me straight away when it launched:

yea, I think I would have rather have purchased the Dragon Slayer. I like the Victors (because of their heavy like attributes), so the DS would have been a much better fit for me.

I like my 3 AC5 (i don't use UAC5 much) Ilya more than my Misery, and use a 3F for my stalker needs.

Both the 3D and the 3F are good mechs. What the Ilya and Misery have is the Hero bonus. I try to play through my mech bays daily to take advantage of the X2 bonus, which stack on the Hero bonus. Just bought the Heavy Metal due to sale. Now I have to grind more c-bills to buy another 2 variants.

I do'nt use cataphracts because of knee mounted weapons.
I use the misery sometime. Same concept as an AC40 Jagger with more tank but less mobilty and bigger target.

You cant exchange those large pulse by 5 medium lasers and put some more DHS and a SRM or use PPC instead (i dont like ppc).
But in pug, the lack of mobility mean you'll probably be the fist to die when they will hide and run away... Unless you drop with a DDC friend... And it begin to be fun.

My only two hero mechs are the YLW and Ilya. While they are both some of my favourite mechs, they both suffer from the fact that they have a fairly limited number of viable builds. They both have 2 really good builds, a handful of mediocre builds and a long list of bad builds.
If you choose the Misery, you have a lot of options, which means you can play the same mech over and over and not get so tired of it. At least I would think so. I don't own a Misery. The Ilya might be a better mech though.

My Misery is a mixed bag, PPCs, LLs, MLs UAC5 and/or SRMs on a STD300. Great for all ranges. I love it.
My Muromets gathered dust for .... a VERY long time. The other day, i decided i wanted to see what would happen if i slapped in 3 LB10X's with 105 shells. The result was my highest Damage and Kills readout I've ever achieved in a single match, 5 Kills, 6 Assists 792 Damage. So i run my Mets fairly often now. Works best as a 'Can-opener' for Assaults, so i tend to find and shadow the Atlai

At the end of the day, what matters is your preference.
If you like Ballistic heavy Heavies, Muromets is amazing. If you like Assaults with a wide range of viable builds, Misery is amazing.
I like both, i enjoy both, i have positive KDR's on both. In the end, its about whether you like Cataphracts or Stalkers more.

Take a firebrand, put 2 AC 20 on it, target info gathering, seismic sensor, UAV and do 4-5 kills per game.
I also have the Muromets and the Misery.
I don't use the muro because of low mounted weapons that upset me (shooting on the rocks). I heard about amazing builds with 3x AC10. I must try it...
The Misery ATM is a slower, bigger, more resilient, AC40 jag. 2 PPC AC20 alpha don't trigger the ghost heat while generating more heat than single shots of dual ac20... But if i must carry such weapons, the victor is a better choice with JJ and 3 modules slots.

There are those of us who remember how PGI buffed the Gauss/PPC combo, sold a bazillion Misery's (not to me, I always wait for the sales at least) and then 2 months later completely nerfed the entire concept of that specialty mech.
This is why I will never ever buy another hero and you shouldn't either.
Muro hands down regardless... it is the ONLY thing I know of that can mount 3x LB10x.
