HI dear Cataphracts pilots.
I want to buy my first mech of this chassis Ilya. and I am wondering, if its good idea run it with XL engine?

I just want ask it before a buy ;)

( I run only Heavy Metal, Dragon Slayer, SHD-5M and all my lights with XL, but any heavy mech yet.)

Thx

it can be done, but you need to be skilled at torso twisting, as well as protecting specific components.

IOW; dangerous but doable.

There are a lot of varying opinions on XL engines, and I don't consider mine to be the best either.

I personally feel that being able to react or reposition faster (XL) is more valuable than being able to survive (STD) and fight at half power for a short while. The exceptions being chassis which can mount the majority of weapons on one side, and use the other side as a shield, since they can survive and fight at full power.

The Cataphract can mount most if not all of it's firepower on one side and can make excellent use of standard engines.

First consider why you are buying the Ilya. Is it simply for the cbill boost, or for the unique placement of three ballistics across Tue arms and torso? If you simply want the cbill boost, you can make a 1X variant with a standard engine. But, if you want to maximize the ballistics, an XL is almost mandatory.

I want Ilya cose I want triple AC mech, so there is just two ways probably.

First: XL engine and decent speed
Second: slow STD and poor speed

I will try XL
Thx guys ;)

Muromets is a waste to standard engine it. It's the heaviest mech that can arm tank and have 3 seperate balistic hardpoints in 3 seperate places. What would you put on it with a standard engine? an AC/20 and some medium lasers? Protector will do it better. Muromets with 3 AC/5's and an ERPPC can still move fast and be a terror, or you can go with a slow XL and do 3 LBX 10's... which is actually quite good as well.

I just bought it, and I am wondering why UAC5 on Ilya don't looks like UAC5 on others mechs?
Not a triple barreled like it should be, but just one big fat pipe. But CTF-3D have normal UAC5 - "Triple"

Why is it?

CTF as of yet doesnt have its weapons showed... just like dragon, centurion, hunch and some other mechs
3D just happens to have its original arm mounted balistic model to look like uac5
if there is one thing that pgi makes on time its this artistic tweaks -> there is one mech redone each month though they dont announce which one they are doing

so if you want to see your ilja to shout HEY I GOT TRIPPLE UAC5 either start shooting or wait till it gets its fix

I run All of my Phracts with XL from the highly Fun Dakka-Phract with 4xAC5's to the Incredibly fast 3D with an AC10, ERPPC and 3 ML's, lets not forget the Ilya with 3xAC5, LL and ML.

Only two I do not run a XL in are the 2X and 1X as I Run AC20's in these mechs.

I would consider myself a good Phract pilot as my K2D ratio is pretty high in all of these chassis.

So Yes run an XL in them then see how you go, you can always slap a std engine and reconfigure the mech to a mini brawler, the Phract is in my opinion the most versatile mech in the game. You will not regret spending CBills or real monies on one of these beasts.

The only reasons to run the Ilya are the triple AC builds, the XL is pretty much mandatory at that point. I don't think a Cataphract in general has enough armor to run typical weapon loads and be slow at the same time. Oh you won't get killed by the side torso but you'll get cored before you get to the fight. Speed=life (unless you're an Atlas).

3 ballistics hardpoints scream AC5's. med-long range, running XL engine gives u chance 2 move away from assaults at decent clip, 3 med lasers provide backup once ammo is gone in long slugfests, as well as ability to leg pesky lights.

4 ballistics mean dual ac5/dual ac2. staggered fire helps heat and keeps enemies juggled. enough punch to do damage while not just firing away with little effect. problem is if swarmed by lights...can u aim well enough before they chip u away?

So I build it around that basic XL280 engine.

Classic old school build:
3 x UAC5 (240 ammo)
3 x MEDIUM LASERS
ENDO STEEL
DBL HS (11)

I played just three games yet. All was wins for my team, but in first they destroy one of my side torsos.
(not a good match for me) Second one I survived with some decent DMG but without kill. And finnally in third match I killed first guy, had DMG over 700 and match score over 100. Best DMG from all.

I think we will be friends with Ilya :) and when it will be masterized it will be really good mech.
