Those who don't know the X games, they are space sims in which trading, building stations, having multiple fleet of ships are the foundations of what's fun in those games. In their latest iteration, they removed the possibility to pilot different ships (now you can only command AI captains), they dumbed down the economy and trading in general, put only about 25% of the number of sectors (call them maps) that we had in X3 and really, really streamlined and dumbed down the combat by limiting the number of weapons available and how many you can fire at will on your ship.
When people found out that the new X game was a dumbed down, streamlined, but more beautiful version of their beloved serie, they decided to take a look at the codes and found several signs that X:Rebirth was supposed to be released on Xbox first, then on PC. In short, they released a console port to the PC, because somehow they got blocked from releasing their game on Xbox. You can't configure a joystick properly, but an Xbox controller works flawlessly! The UI is a mess that screams "made for consoles" and they added silly mechanics like scanning cargos in deep space and retrieving them for magic loot.
The biggest mistake is that they thought they could have their cake and eat it too. They tried to catter to a wider audience by dumbing the game down, without ******* their veteran fans, but their main audience are the hardcore X veterans who have played the games for over 15 years (or so) and never wanted a "version for stupids" of X.
Now, anyone who got steam can go read the forums and enjoy the **** storm, it's quite possibly the worst I've seen (worse than the Rome 2 Total War fiasco).
The moral of the story is: If your main fanbase is made of hardcore PC gamers, don't **** it off by dumbing your game down, because the little benefits of having a fanbase made of unloyal, casual kids who change the game they play every month isn't worth it and it'll damage your reputation for a very long time.
edit: Spelling/grammar mistake... I wrote that in a hurry
