Teamwork and focused damage matter a lot in MWO. Even when you are not playing in a group there are many things you can do to maximize your contribution to the team and the match.

Here are some suggestions for focusing damage

1) Always use R to target your opponents.
2) Focus fire on torso sections without armor or on legs.
3) Cycle targets if you are in a melee and kill off the weaker ones first. Anything with red or orange torso sections or missing CT armor. Your damage is much more effective if applied against your weakest opponents and if everyone else on your team is doing the same thing.
4) Watch for heavily damaged opposing mechs popping out to snipe and then kill them. Typically, mech defenses fail long before offense (Hunchback being a notable exception  ) ... so making sure a badly damaged opponent dies is your best chance to help your team (as long as you don't die in the process).
5) If you have longer range weapons consider getting a zoom module. This was fixed a few months ago and is now exceptionally effective for long range aiming - particularly with ppcs and ballistics.

Here are some team work suggestions.

1) Stick together. Heading off by yourself is extremely risky even if you are a scout moving at 140kph+ (never mind an assault). (In one game I played today an Atlas on the opposing team had decided that he needed to stop our base cap in a conquest map ... so he headed there on his own ... the two jenners at the base cap noticed themselves being fired at and spent the next minute or so eliminating that Atlas ... if he had been with team mates this would not have happened).

2) Choose a wing man. Pick something similar to what you are in or pick an assault that you can follow. Shadow them ... fire at what they fire at. If you are in a brawling medium, a brawling assault can be the ideal choice. Follow them 100m back and focus fire on the same target they do ... this multiplies your effectiveness and keeps you alive longer doing more damage.

3) Focus fire. Fire at the same target your team mates are shooting until it is dead. Mechs defence typically fails long before offence. A mech that gets away can usually continue to fire at close to full damage even if it is one shot away from being cored.

Being successful comes down to mostly two things - STAY TOGETHER and FOCUS FIRE.

There are many more fine points ... tons of strategy and tactics that can be fun and can be refined ... but is very difficult without voice chat. So .. if no one is speaking up then stick with your team mates and focus fire. If everyone does this, matches will be much closer :P

I think this is worth mentioning: Don't feel like you need to go find your own enemy to fight if someone else is already fighting nearby. We're a TEAM, if you help me kill my target faster, we all benefit. I've seen some folks who apparently are in a mindset from other games that they don't want to interfere with a fight by jumping in and piling on. But that's how it's done over here, folks. :P

Also, don't fight fair: Shoot 'em in the back when you can.

Unless their front is currently weaker, of course :P

But don't waste your team walking around to their front. I've seen plenty of targets completely forget they had fire keys getting pummeled from all sides in an attempt to just get away.
