I'm a ballistics kind of player right now... both with CQ LBX and with AC2, AC5, UAC5 spam.

What should I get next?

I run Adv. Sensor Range right now with Adv. Zoom. Seems to be a decent combination.

If you stand still a lot with your ballistics then perhaps seismic sensor so you can tell if someone is coming up your backside. If you move a lot that sensor is worthless.

siesmic sensor is always good. Sensor range is always good. Info gathering if you need to know where the enemy has weak points faster(knowledge is power). Improved Gyro if you are getting hit by a lot of enemy return fire.

UAV upgrades if you want to earn some easy XP by popping a UAV, although if you use AC2/ac5 you may be too far from the brawl to make use of it. Try Arty Strike and the other consumables and see if it suits your style.

All good points, but I would say target info gathering overall, so that you can find the 'soft' spots faster, and put those dakkas to good use when up close.

I also find that if sniping (and only for sniper builds) the new improved gyros modules is good to have as it reduces the camera shake allowing for more reliable/steady aim when taking hits. And for just 2m credits its not a bad expenditure.
Slot availability should weight in as well...
sniper w/2 mod slots - adv zoom & coolshot
sniper w/3 slots - adv zoom, coolshot, and adv gyros.
Surprised though that no one has recommended arty or AS as it is effective no skill required damage. I don't bother as it is a waste of 40k creds (imo) on a disposable consumable. Not great if grinding credits. But it does exceptional damage and at times excessive dmg that ive witnessed. Either way a valid consideration when loading up on mods these days.

I specifically suggested trying them to see if they suit his playstyle ;)

This depends on what you are looking to do.

If you want to play with a unit and want the best possible option to support them, I'd recommend you pick up the Airstrike and Artillery strike. The more people that have them in 12 mans, the better.

If you aren't interested in that kind of play, I'd suggest Coolant 9 by 9, the UAV upgrades (This is extremely good for farming XP and ranking up 'mechs, so it's cost is justifiable in pugs) and Adv. Seismic Sensor - while nerf'ed, being able to stop near ridges and have some idea what's waiting for you is still a worthwhile ability.

Adv. Target Decay I can recommend, but ONLY if you are using LRMs, which it does not sound like you are.

I generally dislike Target Info Gathering since the most vital information - what parts are damaged - streams in fast anyway.

Avoid:

Sensor Range Module - Lots of people suggest this but it's terrible and pointless. You can lock things as far as you need to. Don't waste the space.

Hill Climb Module - Changes speed, not angle. Worthless.

Gyro module - It only reduces shake in places the shake won't actually move your aim; it doesn't impact jump jet shake, worthless if you don't get motion sick.

360 Target Retention - Don't waste the space with this. Your teammates should be picking up the radar slack and if they aren't, you probably aren't in position.

As a standard fire support setup, I'd recommend Sensor Range, seismic, and target information over Advanced Zoom, but some people really like the zoom module. It's a matter of your personal choice.
