And that sums up most of the whines on these forums. If you play for fun, you use a mix of weapons, load outs and mechs because they are fun and cool. If you are obsessed with winning, optimization and only the best, then you use a narrow slice of weapons and mechs because you can min/max them the best.
So I am happy I am in the category where people will run trebs, dragons, awesomes, small lasers, flamers, SRMs, pulse lasers and not the boring competitive category where everyone looks and acts the same because they are utterly obsessed with only the best.
Not to be snide or anything, but have any of you looked at real life militaries and seen the huge variety of weapons they own? You realize that not all of them are the best. You realize that not every weapon system is the absolute best.
Not every mech is gonna be perfect. Not every weapon is going to be perfect. Deal.
I'm going to call BS on this argument. I hear it a lot, but nobody actually really believes this. How do I know?
Because you never ever see flamers. Ever. I can count the number of times I've seen a mech equipped with flamers in the last six months on one hand, and three of those times were me taking 9 flamers on a HBK-4P for giggles.
If you really just wanted to use a weapon because it's "fun" and "cool," well great news! The flamer is both! It looks awesome, it roasts your enemies alive with plasma being vented directly from your mech's reactor! They're really neat to get up close with and melt at people!
...except nobody actually uses them, despite the fun and cool factors. This is because they suck. They're irredeemably terrible. You WILL NOT win games if you are relying on flamers to do so. If you didn't care about winning, you'd have no problem equipping a flamer. But you don't equip flamers, because they're ******* awful, and losing over and over and over with your fun cool weapon is actually not so fun.
It's the same reason you rarely see pulse lasers. Again: fun! Cool! Makes wub-wub dubstep noises and flashes like you're really at a rave!
But nobody uses them. Because using them makes you lose. And losing is not fun.
So yes, it's possible to do okay in bad mechs with bad equipment. My most piloted chassis is the Awesome, so don't think I don't know this. But I'm not going to pretend like it wouldn't be more fun if taking an Awesome meant I had an equal chance of doing as well as my teammate with a Victor.
And finally, I have to ask: if you don't care how good any weapon is, because you're only using them for fun, why are you in this thread? Why do you care how good any single weapon or mech is at all? Because after all, it shouldn't make a difference to you how good anything is, since you're just using it because you enjoy it, and not because it's good.

You'll also notice that real life military isn't overly concerned about fair fights; quite the opposite. So please remember this is a game; it's supposed to be fair and fun.
This. So much this.
