Anyway, I saw the Challenges tab and under "Upcoming Challenges" we have...
September 17th
5:00 pm UTC
Operation 24
But I can't find any information about this? I figure it's likely to come up with the Launch announcements, so if I wait half a day I'll know.

my guess is Operation 24 is 24 hours until the game starts going under due to bad reviews

Even the prize is going to be lame I bet. Nothing like hey free mechbay, exclusive color or redeemable skin for your fave mech as a nod to all beta testers.

We have 21 'mechs as of now.
The Challenge is what will unlock the remaining three 'mechs that will bring the total to 24, and the community is supposed to "play together" in order to get there, like every player has to play 100 drop, and when they get there they have done their part, contributed to the effort, and earned the "24" medallion.
As soon as the magic secret number (with a public fake counter though, could be a million collective drops, or a bajillion, or be completely scheduled in advance, we will never know) is reached, they declare Operation 24 a huge success and hotpatch the new 'mechs in as a wonderful present to the community for their combined effort, along with the "24 medallion" as a thank you to all those who made sure the servers were packed and active for the launch days.

Just take into consideration the following:
-24 is the sum of the prime twins 11 and 13.
=> If you knew this you are a nerd!
-The atomic number of chromium
=> If you knew that you like bling-bling stuff
here my favorit:
-In Brazil, the number is associated with homosexuals due to the number representing the deer in the gambling game Jogo do Bicho and the word viado (a misspelling of veado, deer in Portuguese) being a slang for homosexuals.
=> If you knew that... okay I stop here!!!

LOL
I was thinking get 24 players sign up to stay for 24 hours. God they will never stay a week.
Again you can never "quit" so it would only allow PGI to say we got "11 million players" to throw out a huge number... but only 12 are playing...

God whoever can't do that..... Might as well just give everyone the item and be done with it.
Why is this called a "challenge"? Definitely doesn't seem to fit any of the following definitions... - though maybe an explanation or calling into question "WHY DID WE LAUNCH?..."
chal·lenge
n.
1.
a. A call to engage in a contest, fight, or competition: a challenge to a duel.
b. An act or statement of defiance; a call to confrontation: a challenge to the government's authority.
2. A demand for explanation or justification; a calling into question: a challenge to a theory.
3. A sentry's call to an unknown party for proper identification.
4. A test of one's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking: a career that offers a challenge.

and don;t forget 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, so with 24 being the reverse of 42 it clearly means nothing whatsoever.

You misunderstand.
It's not actually a challenge, it's an attempt to get people to actually play so they can tell us how well the launch went.
We used to have challenging goals, now they are happy just to have people online.

We (those who enjoy playing the game or those who just like to badmouth it in the forums and on Youtube) should all be happy to have people online because that's kind of the requirement to sustain both activities...
