I hardly have time to play, but I love the Mech universe, and at this juncture, am more a collector than anything else. It sucks that I missed the saber reinforcement upgrade.
Is there a newsletter or email alert? I have a folder in my mail that keeps MWO stuff, but I don't see any there. Am I missing something?

You'll have to come around more often! It was plastered all over the client, Facebook, MWOMercs.com...I'm in the same boat though: WTB Founder Hunchy!!!

Yeah, add them to Facebook and you'll definitely get notifications.
Also I know you are a 'mech collector, but those 'mechs will come around again. The Shadow Hawk is likely to remain superior to both, however.

Don't expect anything from the official website or e-mail... with PGI you MUST be on either facebook or twitter to keep on top of half the information because all they do is keep bumping/sharing content that they give out to other 3rd party websites to release information through. E.G. the Sabre screenshot previews all on NGNG forum, shared via facebook... nothing on the official page, and only seen 2 by Niko Snow in a thread the other morning (compared to 10+ via NGNG).

They DO send occasional updates as a sort of newsletter. This is irregular and they don't send one with every patch cycle or major update.
The last newsletter mailed out was on Nov 29 advertising the Black Friday sale.
Like them on Facebook will get you more regular updates, and you can check the Command Chair forum here to see upcoming content.
NGNG has also recently begun posting more 'preview' content, so like NGNG on Facebook for those updates (They have screenshots of the Wolverine & Griffin currently)
It's 2013. Social Media is king. Every company uses them.
