I can see that. I'm still in the "building the garage" process, so I'm always swapping modules anyway, the engine adds mere seconds. I do try to run mechs that don't share engines to save even those seconds, though. ;)

It gets lulz from both sides of the conflict... when I kill someone, they often get onto allchat and say something to the effect of "You had WHAT on that Hunchback?" or "Did I just see a Medium with an AC/20 and 2 PPCs?" But sometimes it's more "This AC/PPC meta is ******** "

Also, you can get moving at a decent pace in a Firebrand with XL 300, 2 UAC/5, and 6ML... I like that one.

I don't own the Brand, but love my 300XL DD, with 2 UAC5, 4 MG and 2 Mediums.

Xl 255, 280, 300 and 330. I am intending of buying a 360 just because of 55 tonners being good light hunters with it.

I own seven of them. I hate swapping engines, it's a pain in the rear.

CN9-D, C1 and A1 Catapults, JR7-D(S), and all 3 of my Shadowhawks. I'm not usually a big fan of XL engines, but the 300 XL is pretty nice.

XL is for lights or mechs that can do 90+ with a 300xl.

No wonder my kill to death ratio is going up....

I prefer 340 360 and 390 XLs. 300XL is ok if you like to go slow i guess.

What speed, exactly, do you consider the upper cut-off for "slow"? I mean, a Jenner with a 300 XL is slow? It does over a buck-fifty with tweak!

Usual rule of them is to use only XL engines on Lights or specialized platforms (Ac/40s mechs, LRM BIG BOATS)..

I only have 1 300XL engine that I share with ( I have more standard 300s engines than anything else) but last night for the lulz I bought a 300XL engine for my Troll Stalker (5x5 LRM+Artemis) and went from 1800 missiles to 2430 missiles by switching out a 300 engine to a XL 300.... and just held down the button for the whole game....

Only died once in 4 games... but its too many missiles for that build.... just messing around...

+1 If your purchasing your first XL, 300 is most likely the best.It costs 5M but you might want to check out mechs that come with XL stock. Such as the Cent D, you only pay about 3M more c-bills and it comes with an XL300.

I find the XL works great on mech that I own such as YLW, Jenner, Catapult, Thunderbolt KIntaro, and ok for a non brawler support orion.

or, all these delightful, easily protected XL Assaults (Victors and Highlanders truck em like a boss) that give up massive firepower to supposedly enhance survivability.

Hint... Carrying enough firepower to decimate your opponent first, is another great survivability enhancer.

I Agree with the OP unless you specifically pilot Jagermechs and Cataphracts primarily then the XL280 is a better choice as your first engine. It's included in the CTF-3D, the Ilya Muromets and the Firebrand if you ever buy hero mechs. It can also be used on some Jenners and the Raven 3L ever since the speedcap got increased.

XL: 280>300>255>325>350 In that order. The XL340 is also a pretty nice one to own, great for the Battlemaster and some of the faster mediums. The 280/300 Are very useful to mediums, heavies and the Jenner. Own atleast one of each, I own 2x XL280's for Jagermechs and the Muromets and a 300 for the Catapults/Jenner. The XL255 is required for the heaviest Cataphract and Jagermech Loadouts.

Standard: 250, 260, 280, 300, 325, 350(Atlas Only) In no particular order. The 300 is great for Stalkers and Awesomes, its an OK engine for the battlemaster even though it does better with a larger XL.

I really gotta drop with you when you are running one of those, at least for the LULZ.

From what I have seen so far, UI2.0 might make it even more of a hassle. Maybe that is their intention, provide a c-bill sink by making people buy more engines just so they do not have to take all that time to switch.

Lots of good advice here. The only suggestion I can add for new people is to never sell equipment, especially engines. You can sell chassis if you want/need to, but having excess equipment is both useful and convenient.

No im just refering to my cents, trebs, dragons and cicadas. 300XL is way to small for them in my opinion.

Two out of the three non-Hero Cents cannot even mount a 300.
