The 'bad apples' are just a reminder how the ELO rankings can get borked in a team game. You have already hinted at that you are aware of the problem, so you may know what 'ELO hell' refers to in this regard. WoT players have come up with their own efficiency rating mods, trying to make any sense of the available (questionable) stats. It's a mixed bag to put it lightly. Works rather well if everybody on both sides can rub 2 working brain cells together. As for the average pub game, it's the exact opposite more often that I dare to admit. You have all kinds of bots, farmers, griefers, TKers and outright stupid in more than sufficient amounts on both sides of a fight. Throw in a borked spotting system and copious amounts of RNG on multiple levels and voila: chaos at its finest. There are so many changes to the game 'under the hood', you can't even trust your own skills anymore. How is that supposed to produce any results that can be compared, much less ranked?

Having played LoL I know ELO hell. But its not a forever thing. Once you break into the levels where there aren't bots etc its extremely hard to tank your rating back into ELO hell unless you start botting or something equally obnoxious. You should give LoL a go, the devs did cite its cash shop model and the ELO implementation is quite instructive.
